With production on David Fincher’s highly anticipated adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo set to begin this fall, casting is starting to fall into place. Stellan Skarsgård was revealed to be in talks to play Martin Vanger earlier today — now Deadline reports that Robin Wright (State of Play) is in negotiations for the role of Erika Berger, a magazine publisher and romantic interest of journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). It stands to reason that we will soon have an answer as to which young actress will land the plum lead role of Lisbeth Salander — last we checked, Rooney Mara (The Social Network), Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty), Sophie Lowe (Blame), and Lea Seydoux (Robin Hood) were the four to beat, though the shortlist has been in a constant state of flux.
Hit the jump for casting details on a pair of indie dramas: From the Rough and Detachment.
THR reports that Oscar-nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Karate Kid) will headline the sports drama From the Rough, inspired by the life of Dr. Catana Starks, the first female head coach of an NCAA Division I men’s team. (It was golf, but still.) The name of the character was changed to Cassandra Turner for the film, but the details remain the same — a women’s swim team coach at a historically black college is given the chance to spearhead the men’s golf team, where she builds a squad comprised of previously undiscovered talent from Europe, Australia, and Asia. Filming will commence in New Orleans this October with a script by Michael A Critelli.
When THR reported on the casting announcements of Detachment from director Tony Kaye (American History X), they focused on William Petersen in the headline — totally justified. In joining the cast, Petersen found his first on-screen role since leaving CSI in 2009 after nine seasons as Gil Grissom. With limited space, I went with Mad Men vixen Christina Hendricks, who likewise boarded Detachment along with Lucy Liu. Partly because it kept with the girls’ club theme established by Wright and Henson, but mostly because Hendricks makes my list for “The Top 17 Things. Ever.”
Petersen, Liu, and Hendricks will star alongside Adrien Brody, Bryan Cranston, James Caan, and Marcia Gay Harden in the high school-set ensemble drama. The script from Carl Lund centers on “a normally detached substitute teacher (Brody) who becomes invested in the students and teachers at the troubled school where he works and grows close to a homeless teen working as a prostitute.” Petersen and Hendricks both play fellow teachers, while Liu is the school psychologist — production began earlier this week in New York.
