First Clip for ROBOCOP Puts Joel Kinnaman to the Test

The first clip from José Padilha’s RoboCop is now online.  The action sequence puts title star Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) through his paces in the new robo-suit, one that’s quite a bit more mobile than the one found in the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic.  Kinnaman’s Alex Murphy takes the suit through a training sequence in which he has to blast his way out of a veritable shooting gallery.  It doesn’t look all that bad, but the terrible music track playing over the whole scene is more than a little bit distracting.

The film also stars Gary OldmanMichael KeatonJackie Earle HaleyMichael K. WilliamsJennifer EhleJay BaruchelMarianne Jean-Baptiste, and Samuel L. Jackson.  RoboCop opens February 12, 2014.  Hit the jump to watch the clip.

Check out the first clip from RoboCop below (via IGN):

Here’s the official synopsis for RoboCop:

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years – and it’s meant billions for OmniCorp’s bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.

That “horrible music track” is ‘Hocus Pocus’ by the band Focus, and it is absolute genius.

    HOWEVER…

It is completely out of place here, but so is everything else in this giant turd of a movie.

    • RiddleThemThis

Haven’t heard Hocus Pocus in a long time, but this is the first time I’ve heard it being regarded as horrible.

I’d buy that for 8.38 dollars.

    Wow. Shitty.

It barely shows anything. Why are people complaining?

      The music.

    • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

      The music.

    • Deeps

The music is crap, but that’s not my issue.
My issue is that part of what made Robocop cool as hell was that he was FAR more robot than human, but traces of his humanity returned as the movie progressed. He was methodical.

This just looks like some kind of Halo super-suit with a wise-cracking cop wearing it, not a machine with hardly any human tissue whatsoever other than the brain, face, and some random organs.

It’s nigh impossible to not compare to the original when it’s so completely off of what made the original so cool in the first place.

Some good actors in this movie and the effects look solid. But the attempts at modernizing Robocop just seem like they were done for the lowest common denominator.

      • LEM

They should have done Deus Ex:Human Revolution.

      • Cunt

The point of this film is to have a more human version of Robocop, being completely aware of what he is and what happened to him through the entire movie, as well as how he dealt with the issue and his interactions with his friends and family.

I don’t see where you get the “wise-cracking cop” when he just said in this very same clip that he’s “been through a lot.”

  • Gerd

well it doesn’t look that bad , but it doesn’t look roboty at all , his movement is very fluid almost like a normal human , in the old movie you could feel he was a robot

    • Deeps

      Precisely.
If this movie was not called Robocop and was called “CyberNinja 2000″, I’d watch it in a heartbeat. Sadly, “Cyberninja 2000″ is not marketable and pillaging old properties apparently guarantees some degree of success in today’s market.

  • Deeps

Garbage. I’ll stick to the original movie.

  • Nicholas Guerra

So, predictable, not entertaining and completely shows a lack of attempting to do anything with this story. Like why should I car if Robocop passes this test, what does that even mean if he fails.

Also the black armor is stupid and so is his collapsing face plate. Dredd this mother up for the love of god and hide your actors face, he’s supposed to be a monstrosity of man and machine and his human soul and empathy is what tells me he’s not just the robot or even the cop but a human being, not your unknown actors dumb face and eyes.

  • cezar211091 .

why was this remake made again?

    • Cunt

Because you touched yourself last night.

I don’t know what everyone is worrying about. This movie looks absolutely deserving of a $1 Redbox rental.

Well that was shit. He doesn’t move remotely like a robot and I don’t like the music.

  • LEM

Whoever did the score for the movie should be shot in the face.

  • cezar211091 .

watching this makes me realize why the original is a classic and this will be just another summer popcorn movie with ,,cool,,music.
