robocop-1987-movie-poster-01For fans of the original Robocop, you can skip the following synopsis. Newcomers to the material might want to read the summary for the first Robocop film if the title doesn’t explain its premise clearly enough:

Paul Verhoeven’s American breakthrough film, Robocop, is an exceedingly violent blend of black comedy, science fiction, and crime thriller. Set in Detroit sometime in the near future, the film is about a policeman (Peter Weller) killed in the line of duty whom the department decides to resurrect as a half-human, half-robot supercop. The RoboCop is indestructible, and within a matter of weeks he has removed crime from the streets of Detroit. However, his human side is tortured by his past, and he wants revenge on the thugs who killed him.

Concerning Padilha’s reboot of Robocop, the Elite Squad director closed the deal to direct the project last March. After that, Padilha eyed Michael Fassbender (Shame) as a fitting replacement for Peter Weller’s over-sized metal shoes, but the role eventually went to Kinnaman (The Killing). Written by relative newcomer Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk (Gran Torino), the reboot is avoiding an earlier script from 2009’s planned remake by Darren Aronofsky. You can read up on Padilha’s comments on the on-going project here. Get caught up with all of our previous Robocop coverage here.

On a lighter note, the sequel to the animated hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will be out just in time for the holiday season in late 2013. The adaptation of a memorable children’s book by Judi and Ron Barrett came out in 2009 with dazzling visuals and a cast that included the voice talents of Anna Faris, Bill Hader and Bruce Campbell. The cast isn’t set for the sequel, but the film will feature Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, a pair of first-time directors who worked on the previous film and Horrible Bosses writers, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
