ROBOCOP Remake Begins Filming in Toronto; Set Images Reveal First Look at New Armor

Well, that didn’t take long. Filming on director Jose Padilha‘s Robocop reboot began in Toronto today and already the first images of Joel Kinnaman as the part man/part machine in his new coat of armor have surfaced online. As a diehard fan of Paul Verhoeven‘s original, it’s likely that no design for RoboCop’s new suit would have been able to escape my scorn. In an attempt to remain as civil as possible, though, I’ll say the sleek, trimmed down design looks to give Murphy a more lightweight approach than the original. In terms of contemporary design comparisons, I’m thinking Dredd 3D meets Pacific Rim. Check out both images of Kinnaman and his new suit after the jump.

Currently slated to hit theaters on August 9th, 2013, Padilha’s Robocop reboot also stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel, and Jackie Earle Haley. [Update: Click here to check out the new hi-res teaser banner for the film]

robocop posterHere’s the full synopsis for the reboot:

In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. RoboCop is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, with Eric Carraro as Executive Producer. The film is currently in pre-production and slated for a summer 2013 release.

Below are the set images that show off RoboCop’s new digs as well as his suit from the 1987 original. What are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments [courtesy of CS]:

I don’t like it, The original Robocop suit was strongly distinguishable from all other suits from any other movie. This action figure in a toybox can easily be mistaken for a Gi Joe super suit or any other modern movie with a suit and that toy will be forever forgotten in the bottom of the toy chest lol

    • GET OVER IT!

true! well said. This is not iconic enough just another standard issue armor look. looks more gi:joe. crap!

      • Carlos Rincones

technology, movements, effects, XXI century, let’s wait to the first trailer ;)

“Lets make him look like Ironman and Batman, nerds love Ironman and Batman.”
    *Oblivious executive high five.

  • will

Looks too generic, too much like the G.I. Joe super suits, too much like Nolan’s Batman suits, too much like Iron Man, not enough like RoboCop. I usually don’t get fannish about this stuff, but I love RoboCop, and would have preferred a more faithful, if updated, design.

    • joe

Come on, even Iron Man looked more like the original Robocop than this, though I completely see the Nolan Batman traits, but hey who knows in the film itself it might actually look good?

  • Gort

PG-13 has been confirmed. They’re not remaking Robocop, they’re remaking Robocop 3.

    Ugh!

    Pass.

Because film rating standards haven’t changed AT ALL in the past twenty years.

Im not too mad about the helmet headpiece visor. It does look like a contemporary version of the 80′s helmet but im disgusted with the suit design. Looks less (Robo) and more like Batman’s Kevlar and if you were going to go that way then why black ?? Lame

And if he runs in this movie at anytime then its not (ROBO)cop

  • Mars

Armor looks pretty cool, glad they went with all black. But it looks too much like just a suit, and not really any sort of robotic part of him. PG13 is a deal-breaker, though…just like Terminator: Pussification.

  • Anonymous

I see they went with the moronic all black choice, a la batman… This with the terrible script rumors and the bitching of the director , its all summoning up to another bland/lame remake.

That suit is a disgrace to the Robocop franchise. I see a lot of people had the exact same thought I had — looks like those suits they used in GI Joe.

You know, he’s supposed to be part man, part machine. Not all man wearing black rubber and plastic.

    • GET OVER IT!

      :)

  • Roland Deschain

Suit’s ok. I don’t think it matters that much to be honest. I just want a good movie. I don’t think people should get hung up on small stuff like the suit.

    • GET OVER IT!

wrong! the suite should be iconic. film is a visual medium, so yes its important along with the script, witch apparently is crap to

  • Marlboroliteman

Me no likey…slap a cape and utility belt on that sucker and he’s Batman. You sure Len Wiseman or Brett Ratner not directing this needless remake?? Paul W S Anderson??? Speaking of P W S A, the Resident Evil movies……. suck hard dried up monkey poo.

  • Griz

Why do all these remakes keep forcing me to appreciate the brilliance behind damn near every chessy, shlock-fest from my childhood?

    • Justin

I can’t deny the suite looks cool. But it’s definitly not RoboCop.

  • Max

“I had to kill Jose Padilha because he made a mistake. Now it’s time to erase that mistake!”

  • Dobby

Joel Kinnamen is an arrogant ass. It seems fitting his new helmet gives him an ass cheek shaped head. I guess they found the suit in the dump bin of Wayne industries R and D division. For all the filmakers smug. Bollocks about how dated the old one is, and how they are going to be cooler and smarter , they sure ain’t off to a good start with this video-game, armor. No wonder Hugh Laurie left.

Will someone please stop Sony and MGM. From raping and pillaging their old catalog please…

  • Chris

They’ll fix it in post. They fix everything.

    • Nate

      Ha, nice.

its “Dredd 3D” all over again! dont trust on set shots people..

oh no! thats not robocop. paid no homage
to original design. looks like generic crap

  • Anonymous

    Man… it loook sweeet as.

  • People

Looks like a suit that shouldve been saved for a possible Metal Gear Solid movie

  • mee

WHAT IF THIS IS JUST A TEST SUIT AND LATER IN THE MOVIE, THEY PAINT PART OF THE BLACK INTO BLUE PIECES LIKE THE ORIGINAL ROBOCOP (let’s not forget the original robocop looked like he had a black suit underneath chest/leg armor that was more metallic blue). Similar to how iron man was all silver (mark II) and then painted red and gold (mark III) in the first iron man.

  • TheTrickster

The design DOES look lazy, but instead of all this whining people should wait for the trailer, at least.
When the first Ironman pic went online, the first thing I tought was “Power Rangers”.

  • V1z1R

Well … seems like there’s a lack of inspiration. Dark Knight mashed up with a Power Ranger. Why did they had to remake Robocop in the first place ? Let’s hope they wrote a good story.

  • Chris Rattray

If Nerd Scorn was ever a factor in the decision-making process of a film, NOTHING would get made.

    Fuck Nerd Scorn.

Judge the final product, not the work in progress.

  • shutupyoudamnnerds

shut up you freaking dorks, the suit is good…i dare you untalented wastes of oxygen to design something better.

    • youareanidiot

What are you, 9? I’m sure a lot of people here could do better. I’d rather read 100 Matt Goldberg reviews than see this POS.

      • Strong Enough

so you’re gonna get started reading those reviews tonight?

  • brNdon

Looks like crap. He’s a mouthpiece away from Snake Eyes. They could have easily made a sleek version of the original. I really liked the look of the helmet from the 2010 teaser poster, but this is just awful.
@shutupyoudamnnerds. I wouldn’t be surprised if anyone and everyone could design something this “good” or better. My five-year-old could probably use a drafting program better than the ass-clowns behind this movie.

  • Marlboroliteman

Collider got it wrong those behind the scene pics are from the upcoming straight to video release “Plastic Man”.

  • Alex Andersson

I heard a rumor that the new Robocop’s armor changes color when he goes into combat mode so this is what we may be seeing. The styling of this new armor is also very stealthy and has a real radar-evading look about it, although it resembles Iron Man’s armor too strongly I think. Yes, the helmet is nearly spot on as a contemporary nod to the older suit, but this looks less cyborg than the original Robocop. This is more like a human head connected to a completely robotic machine… yet still looks like a guy in a plastic-rubber suit

  • Midnight Max

The second I heard about a remake, I knew the suit would end up black. That extended visor makes no sense whatsoever from a practicality standpoint- what protects his head? I have a feeling the “human” hand will serve some kind of purpose story-wise, maybe Murphy will be able to actually “feel” the face of a former family member… I love the original 1987 design and film. Not digging this suit too much at all.

  • Krahazik

While I am a big fan of the color black, most everything I wear is black, I would never have gone with an all black design for a Robocop suit. The metallic blue and black is part of the Robocop image. Plus, most police uniforms I have seen feature a shade of blue as the primary color. He looks more like a military special ops soldier in a power suit thank a law enforcement officer. I agree that the suit looks more like a typical design for a power suit than a cybernetic system.

  • Pragmator

Hmmm … what made the original RoboCop design work so well was that it was huge, clunky, and slow–it was a technically sophisticated Frankenstein’s Monster, which is what RoboCop was paying homage to. RoboCop WAS a monsterous creation that nevertheless earned the respect and admiration of Detroit citizens despite some pretty heavy handed tactics (throwing the ex-mayor out a window duriing a hostage crisis?!).

This sleekness just looks like a armored police suit. I get the feeling from this and everything else I’ve heard about this project that they don’t get why the original is a classic. Hollywood really sucks sometimes.

    Everyone is saying Dark Knight.
I see the Guyver’s armor. Remember that film with Mark Hamill?

The original Robocop armor was definitely a product of its era and lets face it, there hadn’t been an awful lot of films with cyborgs etc before them. it was unique (and the first 18 cert I saw when I was about eight years old). On first apearance, It seemi that this new armor is a lazy design. It looks like a patiche of every film that came before it.
With something like the Terminator or the design of the Alien, those looks are timeless, regardless of the quality of the film. I recond the original robocop was up there too.

What’s Russel Crowe doing in the top right of first picture? ;)

Oh, and the suit looks utterly crap, any money he will be a swat style robocop as opposed to simply all out carnage robocop that we all actually want.

  • Strong Enough

why do people get so upset about a fucking movie? lmaooooo

  • Angela

I just finished watching the original, i cant believe i liked that crap in the 80s, im glad they’re remaking the movie. Its dumb, it’s suppose to take place in the future yet everything looks like 1987. That movie needed an upgrade! Why the hostility towards a newer version? Maybe those not liking a new version probably still sport a mullet with stone washed tapered jeans with a sea green t-shirt! Get over it!!!

  • Justin

I don’t normally like to scorn others design work… but unless they’re going to CGI a _lot_ more onto it, that just looks RUBBISH. As other people have said, it just looks like GI Joe, Batman etc…

Bottom line: It looks like a man-in-a-suit rather than a robot-with-bits-of-human-in-it.
