The internets were thrown for a loop this past weekend when the first set images of Joel Kinnaman in full costume for director Jose Padilha’s upcoming Robocop remake landed online on the very first day of production.  The suit design is quite different from the one seen in Paul Verhoeven’s original, and fans felt pretty strongly about the redesign.  Now even more images from the Toronto set have surfaced, giving us a closer look at Kinnaman’s headpiece (he’s wearing a robe to hide the rest of the suit) as well as co-star Abbie Cornish and some of the film’s futuristic modes of transportation.  I’m with Matt in that I’m reserving an opinion until some official images hit the web since there may be multiple suits in the film and it’s a tad unfair to judge the costume out of context.

Hit the jump to check out the images, and be sure to check out the teaser banner that landed online earlier today.  The film also stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Jay Baruchel, and Jackie Earle HaleyRoboCop opens on August 9th, 2013.

Here’s the official synopsis for RoboCop:

In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. RoboCop is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, with Eric Carraro as Executive Producer. The film is currently in pre-production and slated for a summer 2013 release.

  1. When you said “futuristic police vehicles” I was expecting something a little more than plastic wheel covers on squad cars. This could have been so much cooler. The new Total Recall may not have been much good, but at least they had a really cool aesthetic for the police.

  2. This movie is doing nothing to dispel the rising image of police as black-clad law enforcement ninjas.

Black is synonymous with night, concealment, and secrecy. Police all over America are opting for black clothing and vehicles, as though they are trying to be mysterious and covert.

Frankly, it’s kind of sad. The image of the kindly police officer there to “protect and serve” has been eclipsed by the wannabe-SWAT image where mean all-black is the new norm.

In my small town of 2,500 people, our idiot police chief went out and bought a blacked-out Suburban for patrols, and a black Dodge Charger with ice blue lettering.

This new Robocop looks more like Batman (or as I insinuated above, a Sith Lord) than a traditional police officer.

Unfortunately, police are being pushed to be the very caricature seen in the original Robocop, as the culture around them starts to mimic that pic, too.

It seems this new version doesn’t even get that it’s the butt of its own joke.

  3. They should just let him wear that robe over the suit all the time. It’d look better.

Then they could call him Robe-O-Cop!

    (Thank you… thank you… I’m here all week…)

  4. something is not right here is he wearing 3/4th Robopants? and Roboboots?
I think we really need to wait for something official before we jump to conclusions. I really hope so.
