MGM Officially Cancels ROBOCOP Remake

To the surprise of no one, MGM has canceled its planned remake of Paul Verhoven’s RobocopMovieline spoke to a source at the dying studio and were told the movie, which was at one point set to be directed by Darren Aronofsky, was, “Gone. Kaput. Canceled. It was one of the first casualties.  [Aronofsky] has lost interest anyway, I believe. Think we’re all just going to have to be happy with the three RoboCop movies that are out there”.  I’ll just be happy with the first one since it’s the only one that’s good.

Personally, I was only interested in the remake because of Aronofsky’s involvement.  Without him or an equally talented director at the helm, I think a Robocop movie is unnecessary since Verhoven created not only a great action movie, but a terrific satire that wasn’t afraid to be weird.  Of course, once MGM’s financial mess is cleaned up, this movie could be revived.

Lets just hope it is cleaned up. It would be a real shame if MGM went under. I can't imagine a world without MGM.

How did they get into this mess, it seems impossible.

That sucks, was looking forward to an Aronofsky version of Robocop. The 1st is a classic to me, guess that's all we get.

MGM needs to sell everything, they don't deserve any of these franchises if they are just gonna sit on their hands until they crumble to dust.
The Red Dawn remake would of been coming out this year as well.
    SELL! SELL! SELL!!!

    end of line

It is a bit sad to see the project go, but only because of Aronofsky's potential involvement. He's probably one of three or so directors today that haven't made anything dreadful (I even quite liked “The Fountain” and wrote a bit on it here: http://tinyurl.com/fountrev ). Hopefully MGM gets cleared up soon, though I'm not optimistic.

MGM should start selling off these IPs to more capable studios. A WB RoboCop produced by Legendary Pictures? Yes, please.

Better off my Toei and filmed overseas because Delta City will be capable to be filmed in a Japanese city more equitable to be modern and sophisticated than any US city!

Thank God. The original was bad enough!

though I don't think a remake is necessary (we could use a sequel that just ignores the events of Robocop 3) I like your point. MGM should really sell good properties like this to Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures could make awesome films indeed

3D SUCKS! I Hope they forget the 3D thing and do Robocop remake like is supposed to be, without any crappy computer effects and 3D crap. Life forever Paul Verhoeven’s Robocop!

MGM has to be sold to a Japanese compnay to make the remake of Robocop and to be filmed in Japan well that way the remake will be better than the original !
