First Trailer and Poster for ROCK OF AGES

     December 13, 2011

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages.  The film tells the story of a small town girl (Julianne Hough) who falls in love with a larger-than-life rocker (Tom Cruise) set against the backdrop of the 1980s music scene, featuring songs from the likes of Journey, Foreigner, Styx, and REO Speedwagon.  The gist of the trailer is that if you like 80s rock, you’ll probably like a musical that only features 80s rock and uses it as a basis for the plot.  But there’s also an important lesson:  When sleazy guy played by Paul Giamatti give you a chance at fame, you take him up on his obviously legit offer.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars Diego Boneta, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mary J. Blige. Directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray), Rock of Ages opens on June 1, 2012.

It’s definitely not what i was expecting. I love the era for both its movies and music but…I wasn’t expecting this. Not sure what to think of it….

  • Jimmy

I know what to think of it: it SUCKED! Embarrassing. Tone deaf. Unfunny.

  • Rollingblue

Not sure about the casting. Alec Baldwin looked ridiculous. And the whole subject seems a little dated frankly. A moral crusade against 80′s pop-rock? Zzzzzzzz.

  • sense 11

    Yep looks like a musical

  • terry

    What a joke!!!!!!!
A mega super star cast, David Sonenberg-esque POS!
WTF!!!! This movie is going to rock itself straight into the effing trash can. I cannot believe what I just witnessed. God save the children.

    Needs more Cranston

    • Jimmy D

      Needs more cowbell :o

  • Elitist Prick

Oh man, a movie musical directed by the guy behind ‘Hairspray’ with songs by Journey, Foreigner, Styx, Starship, and REO Speedwagon and starring Tom Cruise as a 1980s rock god looks cheesy. I am shocked and appalled. Where is the Dark Knight-style gritty realism I was expecting!?!?

  • Timothy

It looks even worse than that first still that came out.

  • david

Yup, needs more cow bell !!!!

  • Chachi

I wish I could have watched this whole trailer but my eyes burst into flames about 30 seconds in. Fuggin’ awful.

  • Nick

…interesting. the one thing that gives me major pause is tom cruise singing.

  • 3rsSt

When I heard they mere making this into a movie, I was stunned. This is such a hokey, corn-ball premiss there’s no way the fans of the original music will go to theatres to see this….and I say that LOVING musicals. This looks SO bad…but then again…it does on stage, too. Someone grabbed a bunch of rock songs, threw them together and called it “a show”. God help all their careers.

  • jazzy jace

No Cranston?? All these A-listers hogging the limelight? Julianne Puke, again?!? Maybe Bryan should’ve stayed with Gangster Squad.

  • Mike

    Looks awful. AWFUL.

  • mr rock

All you bashers realize that this was a theatrical production on broadway right? It isn’t supposed to be like whalbergs “Rockstar” It is supposed to be hokey and fun with 80s rock music. Learn your source material before you insult.

  • Jeff T.

So, are they trying to hide the fact Tom Cruise is in it? I mean he was in about 4 seconds of trailer with no dialog. He can’t be that great that they are saving it…..

I can hardly wait to see this movie. Trailers don’t tell the whole story. ..and ones that bashes the movie will the first one to stand in line just out of curiosity sake, especially to see what Cruise can do. Can he really sing?

  • Chris56

Come on! This looks good. I mean i love the rock and the musicals. In the other hand I wanted to see Tom Cruise dancing again

Oh look, the people who fancy themselves movie critics are out in force. No one can ever approach something with an open mind anymore. The actual broadway production was very successful, which is saying something due to the prejudice against 80′s rock nowadays. It’s supposed to be funny and cheesy and goofy. Get off your soapboxes.

  • victoria

I agree with David, have an open mind, lighten up and have some fun. I saw ROA on Broadway and IF you like musicals this movie should be entertaining.

  • James

Alec Baldwin looks properly out of place, but it seems to be played for laughs as per the original show, which is bang on, as it should be.

Do I get a sense that Tom Cruise’s publicist has told him to be funny. Simon Pegg was great in MI4, I don’t think TC got completely into the funny, but here it seems to be working a little better.

I’m looking forward to this immensely.

Saw the theatrical version in London after being guilted into seeing a musical by my girlfriend. It put a massive smile on my face and had me singing 80s tunes all week. The movie promises to do the same. It looks like a goofy, funny and playful movie. A basic plot, cheap jokes, a good cast and rocking tunes worked for The Boat the Rocked so why not this? I will be seeing this movie.

Flower-Power child…..saw the play in NYC 11 times and always left with a smile on my face and a tune on my lips for days afterward…totally looking forward to flic, only regret…could do without TC
