The crew of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have their eyes set on one thing: the Death Star. Following the final trailer for the first of the Star Wars anthology films, Lucasfilm released a batch of character posters on social media to praise the faces that will help the Rebellion defeat the Empire.
Featured are leader of the troupe Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones); Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), “an intelligence officer for the Rebel Alliance”; Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), a “cruel” and “obsessed,” but “brilliant” villain; Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen), “a warrior monk with faith in the Force”; K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), a robot unit “reprogrammed to fight the Empire that made him”; Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), a “former Imperial pilot who’s seen the light”; Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), a “soldier” and “friend”; and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), who is “resolved to win the fight against the Empire.”
Each character basks in the glow of the Death Star blueprints, which the Rebel swat team is sent in to obtain for the Alliance. Not shown is Mads Mikkelsen as Jyn’s father Galen Erso, who was taken hostage by the Empire and forced to work on the Death Star. As teased in the trailers, it seems he was the one to tip off the heroes to the creation of the weapon of mass destruction.
Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards and is scheduled for theaters on December 16th. This will be the true test to see if audiences around the world will gravitate towards these anthology movies as they did to the main trilogy installments. The hype has been noticeably lower than what many felt for The Force Awakens, but what helps is its peg as an untold story of one of the most significant moments in Star Wars history, as well as familiar faces Darth Vader and Saw (from The Clone Wars).
