First Trailer for ROMEO & JULIET Starring Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, and Damian Lewis

     April 12, 2013

The first trailer for director Carlo Carlei’s adaptation of Romeo & Juliet has landed online.  Written by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Gosford Park), the film stars Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) as Juliet and Douglas Booth (The Pillars of the Earth) as Romeo, with a rather impressive supporting cast that includes Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard, and Homeland’s Damian Lewis.  Carlei maintains the original setting of Shakespeare’s play and looks to be taking a rather classical approach to the storytelling.  Following a rather awkward opening with “movie trailer guy” reciting Shakespeare, the clip sufficiently teases the romantic and intense aspects of Shakespeare’s source material.  However, with a story that’s been told countless times, it’s tough to be excited by a new adaptation unless its told in an original or interesting fashion.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Ed WestwickKodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) and Natascha McElhoneRomeo & Juliet is set for release in the U.K on July 26th, but a US distribution deal has yet to be made.

    Looks…ok. I think that’s Stellan Skarsgard’s voice at the beginning, though.

    Swarovski Entertainment….? Well, I guess if you can make a crystal bracelet you can make a movie. If there ever was a place for a promotional tie-in.

    aww I think this looks quite good! I think Hailee Steinfeld is great, so I guess I’m biased towards this being a good movie :)

    self-confessed Shakespeare junkie.

    THIS LOOKS BORING. Seriously. really uninspired. Setting, camerawork, editing…. Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus was brilliant and, y’know, actually did something with the text. this one, you might as well have re-run the old version of Romeo and Juliet, only this one’s got better actors. The modern day one I recently saw that was on a bare bones stage with four props and a bike had more life and movement in it that this trailer.

    I’ll stick with the Luhrmann version. and wait for Much Ado for my next Shakespeare on screen fix.

      How dare you?! >=O

    Yeah I think that it’s Stellan Skarsgard’s voice in the beginning. Even though this has been adapted an ungodly number of times, it has been a while since they’ve done a classical adaptation. So, I guess I’m somewhat interested in this. Hope it turns out well.

    Out of all of Shakespeare’s plays, this is the one I’m least impressed with.

    SPOILERS: I’ve read the script and neither Romeo or Juliet die in this adaptation. I guess they had decided that the shock value of the original had worn off and to try to do something new, something unexpected and controversial.
