Director Spike Jonze is finally gearing up to shoot his first film since 2009’s Where the Wild Things Are, and a casting change is underway. Carey Mulligan was set to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, and Samantha Morton in the mystery project, but scheduling conflicts have forced her to drop out. Not to fear, though, because Oscar nominee Rooney Mara is now in final negotiations to take over the role. Previous synopses had the satirical film centering on a gathering of world leaders meeting to discuss global events from the changing price of oil to the timing of wars, but Variety’s report notes that the story centers on a man who falls in love with the voice of a computer. Given the odd (and fantastically original) nature of Jonze’s past projects, it’s not hard to see either of these potential loglines being true. Mara is coming off a transformative turn in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and she’s landed some highly impressive projects in the wake of Sony’s big-budget adaptation of the Swedish novels. She’s currently filming Steven Soderbergh’s Bitter Pill with Channing Tatum and Jude Law, and she’s poised to shoot one of two new projects Terrence Malick is filming this year. Her role is in the formerly titled Lawless, which stars Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale and takes place in the Austin music scene.
Variety says that details on Mara’s role in the Jonze project are unknown, but it’s obvious that she’s choosing to work with immensely talented and undeniably auteur directors following a double dose of Fincher. I thought she was swell in both The Social Network and Dragon Tattoo, so it’ll be interesting to see her tackle some decidedly different characters. After wrapping on Bitter Pill, the actress is expected to move straight into filming Spike Jonze’s new flick.

so glad i might be alone but Mulligan bores me to tears she has zero charisma and has same expression in every movie
i dont get the hype around her
I like Mulligan, but I think she gets type cast a lot. I feel like this would be one movie she might have done something different. I feel like Tarantino and Jonze are the few directors that make actors work out of their comfort zones, and do it well. I mean Cameron Diaz in BJM. Chris Cooper, and Nic Cage in Adaptation.

I just got the Criterion Collection of Being John Malkovich. For some reason Gondry does the commentary. But he ends up calling Jonze on the phone half way through. Gondry thinks Kauffman doesn’t like him, and asks Jonze about it. Jonze replies Charlie is trying to direct his own screenplays now. He is writing one that he just doesn’t want to direct, and he asked me to do it. But he’s trying to direct for the most part now. He said after Charlie finishes a movie he’s directing (Frank & Francis.) And after I’m done with this movie I wrote my self (which he said started shooting in April.) We’re going to start working on that
