First Trailer for THE RUM DIARY Starring Johnny Depp

     August 25, 2011

The first trailer from writer/director Bruce Robinson’s The Rum Diary is now available online. Starring Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jenkins, and Giovanni Ribisi, the film is based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name and centers on journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) who moves to Puerto Rico where he eventually finds both his voice as a writer and his integrity. I know people have been waiting for this film to finally make it before their eyes for some time and, as far as first impressions go, the trailer doesn’t disappoint. Moviegoers may pay to see Depp revisit the mind of Thompson, but they’ll stay for Jenkins’ wig.

Check out the trailer after the jump. The Rum Diary opens later this year on October 28th.

Here’s the trailer:

Here’s the official synopsis for The Rum Diary:

The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s “The Lost Generation,” Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals.  It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

I know right? and my world just become a little more grey when i find out she was a lesbian, and don’t get me wrong i love lesbians but they don’t love us, and that’s a fact.

I agree. I’ve always liked Amber Heard and I was so disappointed when she came out as a lesbian. She doesn’t know what she’s missing.

They could have kept the plot faithful to the book and made a good adaption that would still have drawn some interest from the Fear and Loathing (film) fans. Kemp trying to take down Sanderson with a big story? Its just a completely different plot from the novel and though more accessible as a mainstream draw its kind of a letdown since I think they could have made a good independent out of a less Gonzo more direct adaption. There was madness in the Rum Diary but no hallucinated lizard tongues, its a story about a man coming to terms with his age, and holding to his morals rather than selling out, in a caribbean city gone mad with its explosive growth. I’ll hold out hope that they just played up the Fear and Loathing for the trailer.
