Actress Keke Palmer says she’s been asked to join Marvel’s adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic Runaways.  Speaking to Essence Magazine [via /Film], Palmer said,

“I’ve had a nice little break with the steady TV show but I’m definitely ready to do some more films again. I was just asked to join a new Marvel comic project called, “Runaways.”

Palmer current costars on the Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP and she also played Akeelah in Akeelah and the Bee.  Hit the jump for a recap on what we know so far about Runaways.

For those who don’t know, Runaways centers on a group of teenagers who go on the lam when they discover that their parents are a cadre of supervillains known as “The Pride”.  While they’re on the run, each teen discovers they’ve inherited a special gift or ability.

It’s worth nothing that none of the lead teen characters in the comic are African-American women, but there’s nothing inherent in the story that should keep any character locked to a specific race.  It’s also possible that Palmer could be playing a character who isn’t in the books and is original to the film.

Here’s a brief rundown of what we know about Runaways so far:

  • British screenwriter Drew Pearce is handling the screenplay.  Pearce is best known for the UK comedy series No Heroics, which chronicles a group of superheroes in their day-to-day lives.
  • Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) is directing.
  • They’re planning to shoot in March in Los Angeles.
  • The project is going under the codename “Little Faces“, which, as /Film points out, is a reference to 1960’s-1970’s English rock-n-roll band which had a song titled “Runaways.”

I hope she takes it. I dont watch her show “True Jackson VP” but I’ve seen her in movies such as The Longshots, Akeelah, and Shrink and she did wonderful in them. She has talent so I hope she does well in her career.

I dare anyone to start getting angry about the racial changes in the cast.

In another article Marvel stated that they want the ethnicity of the cast to remain authentic of the comics. He particularly was talking about Nico’s character.

I think she’s an awesome choice. Btw did anyone catch last weeks community where donald glover woke up in a spiderman outfit? It broke my heart a little bit

I guess we can only hope she’s playing the female version of Xavin instead of Nico or Karolina or a new character.

I’m always a little dubious about actors from Nick teen shows being cast in a film I’m interested in, never mind one based upon a favourite comic book.

Keke started as a film actress years before True Jackson , she is the youngest ever to be nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Lead Actress, this is a award where other actors nominate other actors so she has the respect from her peers no matter if she did do Disney and Nick

so glad. I really hope she gets the part of Xavin.

I always thought Molly was mixed or black though? Although I haven’t read the comics in years, so I don’t remember specifically if her parents looked like they were a certain race.
