As we were waiting to find out whether Rupert Sanders would return to direct a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman or move on to another property next, it looks like the latter option has prevailed.  Though it’s not the one we expected.  Sanders is reportedly signed on to helm The Juliet, an adaptation of a short story by Alfred Bester.  There are few details on the story at this time, other than it is a sci-fi romance tonally similar to Bonnie and Clyde and set in the near future.  Henry Bean (Noise) wrote the script for the Sony Pictures and New Regency film.  Hit the jump for more on The Juliet and what this means for the other projects Sanders’ was reportedly circling.

rupert-sanders-the-julietDeadline reports that Sanders will indeed make Bester’s The Juliet his next directorial effort, though The Playlist brought the Bonnie and Clyde reference to our attention.  Best remembered as one of the early inventors of modern science fiction, Bester was the recipient of the first Hugo Award in 1953 for his novel, “The Demolished Man.” As for Sanders, after the success of Snow White and the Huntsman, followed by the bad press of his rumored affair with star, Kristen Stewart, the director was attached to a number of projects.  Among them was a SWATH sequel that would instead focus on the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth).  Then there was the drug-slanted thriller,  90 Church: The True Story of the Narcotics Squad from Hell, about “a green recruit whose eyes are opened by working in the corrupt Federal Narcotics Bureau in New York City in the 1960s.” Justin Haythe penned the adaptation of the as-of-yet-unreleased Dean Unkefer book.  Most recently, Sanders was reported as circling Van Helsing with Tom Cruise starring in the title role.  It looks like the director wants to stick to the romantic fare, but possibly avoid the tentpole feature, at least for his next go-round.
