Russell Crowe Talks MAN OF STEEL Fight Scene

     October 19, 2011

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is now deep into production, as evidenced by the many, many set photos that have leaked to the interwebs. Today we don’t have any set photos, but Russell Crowe has let loose a possibly spoilery detail. The actor plays Jor-el (Superman’s biological father, for the nerd-deficient), and earlier today he tweeted about a fight scene that he’s been filming with a certain cast member. Details of the scene in question could be considered potential spoilers, so I’ll keep it clean here on the front page. Hit the jump for the details.

Russell-CroweApparently Jor-el will get into a scuffle with villain General Zod, played by Michael Shannon. Crowe tweeted the following:

“15km bike ride, umpteen hours fighting Michael Shannon. He’s very hard to put down. Hard to tell who wins, we are still fighting tomorrow.”

Could the fight be taking place on Krypton? Leaked pics of Crowe’s Jor-el costume revealed that he’ll be sporting some pretty cool alien garb, so one assumes most of his scenes take place on that planet. At this point it’s all speculation, but it’s pretty neat to know that Crowe will be going toe-to-toe with Shannon. The film also stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Ayelet Zurer, and Christopher Meloni. Man of Steel opens June 14th, 2013.

Here’s a possible synopsis for the film:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

This is going to be FANTASTIC!

i feel like a little kid again

I hope the fight between Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon will knock everyone on their ass.

  • Edward Lee

Uhhh … everyone knows that Jor-el was a scientist, right? And Zod was a general? How is it these two could possibly go toe-to-toe? Good grief.

    • Ruprect

Pfft, yah … and those leaked pics I found on alt.nerd.innane-trivialities cleary show that Jor-el is puching with his right hand when issues #149 of Superman and # 43 of Action Comics BOTH indicate that the Ruling Science Caste of Krypton (of which Jor-el was a member starting in Action #39) were all LEFT handed.
This movie is going to suck now.

//mocking Comic Book Guy voice off

I think I will wait and SEE where (or IF) they are going with this before I go into nerd-oplexy.
That being said, seeing Supes walking around without his red undies certainly gave me pause. For now I am trusting that between Snyder (and his Producer/Wife), Nolan (and his P/W), Goyer and a very fine cast, the movie can’t go TOO wrong.

(Of course I said pretty much the same thing a year away from Superman Returns too. ) :(

Jor-el and Zod fight. I’m guessing Zod wins. Are they really going down the Zod killed Supermans parents route? And so he becomes superman to avenge their death? Heaven help us!

  • Andy

Notice also that the synopsis doesn’t say Krypton explodes? He is sent to earth but it might be for reasons other than kryptons impending demise.

  • DC sucks

expect ALOT of slow motion and yelling…ala… 300

  • lacutis

I think this movie will be crap… remember how ppl were complaining about the Tom Jane Punisher in 2004 (Which I really like), and the studios wanted to redo it and we got the crappy Warzone… I think this movie will be the “warzone” movie of what Bryan Singer did with Superman Returns (Which I think will be a superior movie to what we will get now)

    • Strong Enough

your a complete idiot. first of lal this is Zack Synder. if anything the movie will be visually off the charts. the fact that you compared this movie to warzone tells me your a very slow person

  • Joe

as someone pointed out, why would Jor-El be physically fighting Zod. he is a scientist fer cryin out loud! unless of course they’re not in fisticuffs but Jor-El is fighting with some sorta weapon.

i really hope the plot doesn’t change Jor-El into some sorta physical warrior like Kal-El. that would not be right at all.

  • Dan

You guys are retarded. Just because he’s main “job” is to be a scientist doesn’t mean he cant fight! remember? ‘advanced civilization’! Duh!

    • Dan

P.S. This movie will freaking know your socks off! Do not compare it to Bryan Singers in any way. That is an insult to Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder

      • Aaron

No, that’s not an insult to Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder. Choosing that combination to re-do Superman was an insult to Superman himself.

    • Joe

Why would that be “retarded”? Jor-El is also a benevolent man who discovered the Phantom Zone as a humane prison for Krytonian criminals. He was also impressed and connected to Thomas Wayne’s (Bruce’s father) humanity and generosity in the initial probe of Earth as the new home for Kal-El. He has also contribured a lot to the scientific progress of Krypton and is renown in the populace.

Which of these personality and character attributes suggest that he’d pursue a slugfest with General Zod?

  • Tarek

Will they fight will light sabers ? And what about Ewoks ?

  • dukeofyork

What exactly is the point of adapting a comic that has already been adapted 5 times plus multiple television series if everything is going to be the same. If Krypton doesnt explode and Jor-El isnt a scientist I would in fact be pleasantly surprised. If you are going to reboot something at the very least try something new.

I love superman, however, if I wanted the exact same thing I have read/ seen 1000 times over I would just rewatch/read what is already out there. As a fan/nerd who often rages at poor adaptations I would like to say that sometimes fan/nerd rage is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STUPID.

  • Marco Polo

Okay people think, this is a re-boot of re-boots. Jor-El can still be the scientist who we all know and love, Zod can still be the overly-aggressive General Zod, but what would happen if the ruling party, council or what have you is like 1930′s Germany? You have a great mind that wants out and off the planet. Albert Einstein wanted the first train out of Munich when Herr Hitler came into power. The Dictator-ship hears about what Mr. El is doing and wants to put the kibosh to it. Perhaps THEY want his ship to INVADE Earth….Hmmm that sounds cool. They sic Mad-Dog Zod on the house of El. Fighting ensues momma and poppa nearly get placed in the political sweatbox, or the Phantom Zone, even.

Baby Kal gets thrown into the ship and makes a break for Earth, somehow. Zod et al. gets here too. Perhaps there were two ships. Why not? The U.S. had two atomic bombs to drop on Japan in case the first one didn’t want we wanted it to.

Yeah all of that sounds possible.

Zack Snyder is directing. That should be enough said right there.

This movie is NOT going to be anything special..
