Ryan Gosling Talks THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, Fan Posters for DRIVE, His Directorial Debut HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER and ONLY GOD FORGIVES

     March 27, 2013

Opening this weekend in New York and Los Angeles is one of the best films you’re going to see this year: director Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines.  The pic centers on a professional motorcycle rider turned bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper).  Saying more would be detrimental to your enjoyment of the film, and I would encourage you to be very careful when reading about it.  Pines also stars Eva Mendes, Bruce Greenwood, Dane DeHaan, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, and Rose Byrne.   For more on the film, here’s images, clips, and everything we’ve previously posted on the film.

At the recent New York City press day, I got to speak with Gosling.  We talked about how he prepared to make sure his character looked real and authentic on screen, the motorcycle stunts, whether he’s seen the Mondo Drive posters, his directorial debut How to Catch a Monsterwhether he has seen a cut of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives (Gosling says it’s ”very very extreme.”), and reveals that they’ve asked some of the fans who made Drive posters to make some Only God Forgives posters!  Hit the jump to watch.

Finally, The Place Beyond the Pines will be expanding into more theaters in April, so if you don’t live in NYC or L.A., you’ll still be able to see the film in the near future.

Hey never leave comments (until now) but have to say I’ve watched a bunch of your interviews and by far they are the best out there. I mean on any website. Your questions are great and there’s a clear intelligence to your manner in approaching the interviewee. I wanted to leave a comment to say these are super, thanks and keep up the good work.

    • Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub

thank you for the kind words

    • JohnnyB78

Agreed…frosty a interviews are the reason I still come here regularly…Matt on the other hand…yikes! Haha

  • James

Gosling did seem out of it, no? lol… Regardless, he is the man and I can’t wait to see this film. Speaking of it opens on the 29th in limited theaters, when will it expand wide? Anyone know? Great interview as always Steve.

    • Andrew

It’s officially going wide April 12th, but I know it’s expanding to secondary cities like Boston on April 5th and I’m sure there will be many other cities that day as well.

      • James

Ok, thanks man! It can’t get here fast enough.

  • tom

Gosling just constantly seems awkward in interviews. i remember him on Jimmy Fallon and i was like, “this dude is weird.” great actor though. and great job by Frosty, as usual

  • james

He looks like Alec Baldwin in the interview

  • Andrew

Ryan’s always been the soft-spoken type in interviews, although in different environments he’s really fun, like his interviews with Conan O’brien usually are.

  • Helen

    Hi there

I highly agree with RichyA, Steve Weintraub’s interviews are some of the most articulate, well researched ones out there. Most junket interviews make me cringe, with most interviewers not seeming to be actual movie fans. I really think the people interviewed appreciate the effort and enthusiasm. Don’t stop :)

  • Brady

Great job Steve I really appreciate how diverse and intelligent your questions are…..did you by chance ask him anything about the untitled Malick pic he did w Bale?

    • Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub

I really wanted to…but with only 4 minutes I had to pick only a few things. if I had more time…

      • Brady

Totally understabd. Great questions none the less, its going to be sick when he is announced in Justice League as well as Booster Gold

  • Mark

Can’t wait for only god forgives, love Nic Refns films. Pusher trilogy, drive, fear x, Valhalla rising all amazing.
