Ryan Gosling is currently in talks to star in Disney’s The Lone Ranger alongside Johnny Depp. The actor would be taking on the title role, with Depp having been set to play Tonto for quite some time now. Gore Verbinski (the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies) is set to direct with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. The Wrap reports that Gosling is in talks to star, but his schedule may not allow him to take the role given that The Lone Ranger is poised to start shooting this fall.

Depp had previously mentioned George Clooney and Brad Pitt as possible actors to star with him, but I quite like the choice of Gosling. He and Depp are both versatile guys, and if Gosling ends up with the role it’ll be fun to see the two play off each other in a fun adventure flick. Verbinski previously described the Justin Haythe-scripted story as Don Quixote-esque, with Depp’s Tonto serving as the unreliable narrator.  Depp has also expressed his desire to salute Native American culture. Here’s hoping everything with Gosling works out.

if Gosling takes on the role(and i hope he does), and goes “Gary Oldman-mode”(his favorite actor), he might overshadow Depp. Gosling needs to showcase his great acting ability on big mainstream affair. Ledger did it in The Dark Knight. i’m sure Gosling can do it too.

Interesting comment although I don’t think Ryan Gosling ‘needs’ to do anything, the suitors are coming in thick and fast and the guy has a very credible reputation, becoming a huge star and commanding big dollar, or whatever mainstream success brings isn’t a necessity… but I dare say (from the one performance i’ve seen) he’s got the capability to do something spectacular like Heath Ledger did.

I’ve only seen Gosling in Half-Nelson and that performance blew me away, as did the turn from his co-star. It seems so far (aside from his recent casting in Logan’s Run) that his movie choices have been the more indie variety therefore would be interesting to see him in such a high profile role. The guy’s got bags of talent from what I’ve seen though, I need to dig out more of his back catalogue….

Agent_Black – i’m happy that i’m not the only one who shares the same enthusiasm for Gosling’s acting. i, on the other hand has only seen two of his movies. one is the Notebook, which did nothing for me. i thought he was one of those actors who stars on chick flicks all the time. then i heard he got nominated for Half Nelson(still hasn’t seen it). it got my attention. which lead me to watch Lars and The Real Girl. it blew me away. then i started to pay real attention to him. on interviews and his IMDB profile.

what i really like about him was how much he wanted to shed his child-star image, and be a REAL actor. it reminded me of actors like DiCaprio and Ledger, who were labeled early in their career as another kind of actor, but worked hard to be an actor that they want to be.

the indian´s name is way to racist, “TONTO” means FOOL in Spanish.

Quite a step down from Clooney and Pitt. Personally, I don’t see Gosling fitting into the boots of The Lone Ranger. You have to be a ‘man’s man’ to wear the mask and shoot the silver bullets. Gosling simply is not.
