Yesterday, we learned that the choices for playing Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in Martin Campbell’s adaptation of the popular DC superhero comic were down to Justin Timberlake, Ryan Reynolds, and Bradley Cooper. 24 hours later, Variety has our answer: It’s Reynolds. When it came down to these three choices, I am overjoyed that Reynolds landed the role. Hit the jump to find out why I think this is the right choice.
Now, while I would prefer that we had the John Stewart-Green Lantern just so we could have some diversity among our superheroes, if we have to go with Hal Jordan, I think Reynolds is a fine choice. In addition to his endless charisma and charm, physical fitness (do a Google Image search for Reynolds and try to find a picture of him wearing a shirt), and, oh yeah, ability to act. That’s not to say that Timberlake or Cooper wouldn’t work. I think Timberlake is a far better actor than people give him credit for but he’s got a lot on his plate with his clothing and music empire. Cooper’s shown he can be a hero in “Alias” but these days his big-screen roles cast him more as a sleazebag/ass-hole so not exactly superhero material (Variety says Jared Leto was in the running; yeah, right).
But the best part: it totally delays a potential “Deadpool” movie. After “Wolverine”, I have no faith in that team to put together a quality film despite Reynolds’ best efforts. “Green Lantern” is a project with far more potential and I think a lot of fanboys just breathed a sigh of relief that Reynolds has the role. This is a great opportunity to Reynolds!! I hope he can show all your talent …. but I think Shawn Robert would be better as Green Lantern……. a big hug to the OMELETE!!!!

Sucks for the likely shitty “Deadpool” flick, but hey, maybe we can get Dennis Haysbert as that one GL corps guy from the JL cartoon series.

dammit…why did Deadpool get cast…he’s too adorable for this role. What we need is for Gregory Peck to come back from the dead and do his thing…is that too much to ask?
That’s awesome casting simply because it’s so weird. I think in all the fan-casting sessions over Green Lantern, no one in the history of mankind has said “If only Gregory Peck were still alive.” I’m not mocking here. This honestly made my day.

As per matt and jaymz comments about a black green lantern character aka Jon Stewart in the comics, he can still be a big part of the GL movie if they bring in the GL corps. I would look for a big name actress to be named for Carol Ferris and one would think that Sinestro would be in at least the second half of the movie as well. That could be some interesting casting there, i would look for a relative unknown for Sinestro just to be different. They could always go with Hugo Weaving i suppose but then you spending a lot of money just on the cast. Good luck Ryan and DC and let’s hope this movie actually get’s made as get’s made well!

do a little bit or research and you guys wouldn’t have to spceulate on plot points of the movie that have been revealed for about a year. the corps and sinestro are large parts of the movie. hal and sinestro will have a training day type thing going on.

After getting to play an A-list superhero commodity like GL, I kinda doubt that Reynolds will risk getting (further) typecast and/or diffuse his “superhero cred” by taking on the less-than-well-known Marvel character… even one as tailor made for him as Deadpool. It ain’t like after “Superman” came out, Christopher Reeve was angling to take on…oh, say Palladin for Marvel. Then again, Christain Bale did take on the similarly marketed Terminator franchise after “Dark Knight”…hmmm.
