We reported earlier today that Shia LaBeouf and Chris Pine are “rumored choices” for the lead role in John Hillcoat’s Triple Nine — it looks like LaBeouf and Pine are likewise among a group of young actors in contention for a starring role in Safe House opposite Denzel Washington.  Here’s the full list:

  • Ryan Reynolds
  • Tom Hardy
  • Zac Efron
  • James McAvoy
  • Sam Worthington
  • Shia LaBeouf
  • Taylor Kitsch
  • Garrett Hedlund
  • Channing Tatum
  • Jake Gyllenhaal
  • Chris Pine
  • Chris Hemsworth

Hit the jump for more details on the project, including the nature of the role the victor will play.

The lengthy list is culled from reports by Deadline and Heat Vision; the latter indicates that Reynolds is “emerging as the frontrunner.”  Washington finalized his deal weeks ago, and Universal is expected to extend an offer to one of the above shortly.

The thriller was scripted by David Guggenheim, with Swedish director Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash) making his English-language debut.  The plot revolves around “the only surviving agent of an attack on a CIA safe house as he tries to get a lethal prisoner to a second safe house before being taken out by violent forces that want them both dead.”  Washington will play the prisoner, while the chosen will play the CIA agent.

Were you the casting director, who would top your wishlist?

  1. Oh, definitely Jake Gyllenhaal. I'd probably only watch it if he was in it. In my opinion, he is such a deep actor and can work with anything he's given. Plus, I think this would be a little new for him, and I'd definitely watch it if he was in it.

  2. No Washington will play the prisoner. The role of the CIA agent is the younger of the two main roles. Even still, as described in the script, a few of these actors are entirely TOO young for the role. Like Zac Efron.

  3. McAvoy would top my list, no question. I think he can do pretty much anything and I think he would have good acting chemistry with Washington. I think Ryan Reynolds would have that chemistry with him too, so he gets 2nd place.

As someone commented earlier, some of these actors are way too young, in appearance at least, to pull this off. Most of them I like in some way, but I can't see them holding their own against Denzel Washington (in terms of presence, not necessarily acting).

    And who is Taylor Kitsch?!
