Sally Field to Play Aunt May in Marc Webb’s SPIDER-MAN Reboot

With Martin Sheen tagged to play Uncle Ben in Sony’s reboot of Spider-Man, attention now turns to the role of Aunt May. THR recently broke the news that none other than Academy Award-winning actress Sally Field is in talks to take on the prolific role, memorably portrayed by Rosemary Harris in Sam Raimi’s previous Spidey trilogy. While negotiations have just started, one can only hope this casting choice comes to fruition as Field is an incredible talent who would embody the genial heart and soul needed to bring the character to life.

Aunt May is one of the most important characters in the Spider-Man universe. After the death of Uncle Ben she remained Peter Parker’s only familial connection. As stated, Harris provided a stellar take on the character, so Field, assuming she gets the part, will have some tough shoes to fill. Spider-Man is directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and stars Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Emma Stone (Easy A) and Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill). The film is set for a July 2012 release. I was one of the many who were disappointed in Sam Raimi’s departure from the Spidey series. While part three was an oddity, the first two were spectacular achievements in comic-book filmmaking (that Green Goblin costume notwithstanding).

However, I must say I’m growing more and more excited for the reboot with each passing day. Garfield, in my opinion, will make a terrific Peter Parker/Spider-Man (if you don’t believe me, check out his killer performance in The Social Network), while Stone and Ifans are solid choices as Gwen Stacy and Doctor Connors.

The casting of Martin Sheen though is something of a master stroke, while the addition of Momma Gump (if she gets cast) is reason enough for me to believe Sony is headed in the right direction.

What do you think? Is this a good move? Can Field fill the shoes of Harris?

    • Yeah. Personally I think it would’ve been better to keep the story going – bring on a different director, new cast and such, but build off of what Raimi’s films started. Create a different tone – heck, make them different movies, but keep things moving along. There’s a hude rogue gallery to play with in the Spidey universe – with reboots we may have to endure more of the same.

That’s something that I’d like to see happen to the Batman franchise. Nolan made his mark – after the third film, his story arch is complete. Bring in someone else – new cast, crew, etc. – and let them take the series in a new direction. Don’t reboot it – it will still be Batman 4 – but make it different enough so that it stands as its own trilogy.

  1. Sheen as Ben made me uneasy. Fields as May makes me think the people behind this movie don’t really understand the characters, but are just going for star power.

    • Going for star power? Are we talking about the same movie?

Last time I checked: Andrew Garfield was picked out of obscurity and even with the potential Oscar buzz he still isn’t a big name, Emma Stone has just one leading role and a few supporting roles supporting to her name, barely anyone knows who Rhys Ifans is and last time I checked Sheen and Fields aren’t that huge themselves.

  2. Im getting more excited for this movie. Garfield is an amazing young actor. And Sheen will probably be great. Im not sure how I feel about Field yet though. Harris did such an amazing job with Aunt May Im not sure if Fields can match it.

  3. i wasn’t too enthusiastic about them rebooting it after just a few years(i mean, Spider-man 3 was bad, but it’s not batman and robin). but the attachment of Webb made me at least interested on the project(i love 500 days of Summer). then Garfield was cast and i thought, who the fuck is Andrew Garfield. i became more skeptical on the project. then they cast Emma Stone(haven’t seen Easy A but saw her in Superbad and i love that movie). i thought not bad. then i saw Social Network last week(it’s first day here in the philippines), GARFIELD IS AMAZING! I’m curious to see him on Never Let me Go. The three lead in the Social Network were amazing.. and I’d go for Garfield first to be nominated than Timberlake(which is also amazing) for best supporting actor(and i think Jesse Eisenberg deserves a best actor nomination. he is the most deserving to be nominated among the three.)

Seriously, the only thing bad about this reboot is that IT IS A REBOOT. if there was no Raimi directed Spider-man, we would be super excited for this.

  4. Aunt May was my least favorite character in Sam Raimi’s Spider Man trilogy. She was sooo annoying and cheesy. Sally Fields take should be a lot better.

  5. If you think Andrew Garfield was good in The Social Network you definitely should see him in Terry Gilliam’s Dr. Pernassus. That film was amazing and Garfield was the best actor in it!

  6. If you think Andrew Garfield was good in The Social Network you definitely should see him in Terry Gilliam’s Dr. Pernassus. That film was amazing and Garfield was the best actor in it!

  7. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA.
Removing Raimi from Spider-Man would be like giving the presidency back to Republicans, its a good idea if you a reactionary idiot.
I still think Spider-Man 3 unjustly given the most amount of fanboy whining ever, I mean at least Venom origin was left intact unlike EVERY X-Men movie. And Raimi stayed committed to the series unlike Bryan “I challenge you to make blander films” Singer.
Viva La Raimi, Viva La Ditko, Viva La Lee, eff this reboot.

  8. Who was doing crack when THIS decision was made? Field may be near the biological age of old Aunt May, but seriously, even under heavy make-up (and it’d have to be noticeable), is anyone gonna buy it as credible? And don’t give me crap that “it’s acting”– I’ve seen a lot of old-age performances over the years, and this sounds like a recipe for disaster. THAT SAID, I’m still looking forward to this!

  9. also saw on imdb that the first villian’s gonna be the lizard…does avi arad just have a vendetta against marvel after he left?

spidey3 was bad in comparison to the other two and seeing what raimi had planned for spidey4, i dont blame sony for dropping him (the vulturette? really?) dunno bout grafield aside formt he fact he looks like what would happen if bert and big bird had a love child and im trying to figure out how they’re gonna fit a mask over that helmet of hair he has…but martin sheen as uncle ben? sally fields as aunt may? gwen stacy even being a character in the movie altogether???

    no. just…no.
