THR is reporting that Sam Mendes (Away We Go) is in negotiations to direct the 23rd James Bond film. The production is clearly moving ahead much faster than expected, especially in light of yesterday’s report that Bond’s timetable was uncertain due the MGM sale. While that sale is still moving forward, Bond 23 has its eye on a 2011 release date. Writers Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Peter Morgan, and producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are still attached in their respective roles.
Back in October, Daniel Craig was signing autographs for fans when one asked when the next Bond film would come out. Craig said they were planning to shoot, “Late next year,” which is now late this year. It will be interesting to see if the hiring of Mendes pushes up the timetable on the film. It looks like it will definitely push back the adaptation of the Vertigo comic Preacher, which Mendes is also attached to direct.

This marks the second time in a row that they have gone against the grain when hiring a director. Mendes is not known for action set pieces, just like Forrester before him. Both were well known for doing character studies and making Oscar-level dramas. Interesting that after the perceived let-down of Quantum of Solace that they went after the same type of director.
I LIKED QoS though, just not nearly as much as Casino Royale. Then again, CR is one of my all time favorite films, so it won't be easily topped.
How silly is it to write “Sam Mendes” with (away we go) next to it!?! American Beauty? Isnt that what he is really known for?
Mendes did work with Craig on Road To Perdition which is the film I remember Mendes for. I think it might be an interesting choice. I just hope that the action in this film as less handheld, that was my only disappointment with QoS.
“Revolutionary Road” was a masterpiece, while “Quantum of Solace” pretty much sucked and had way TOO much action. I believe Sam Mendes could make a better Bond film.
