At tonight’s Saturn Awards here in Los Angeles I had the chance to talk to Sam Raimi on the red carpet. While he’s been rumored to be doing Oz as his next project, when I spoke to him, all he wanted to talk about was World of Warcraft. From the way he spoke, the man is really into the game and it sounded like that’s the project he really wants to do as his next film. I also asked him about the rumors that he could be directing The Hobbit. He seemed to think those were just online rumors and nothing more.
Since I have so much to post, for more info you should watch the interview after the jump. I’ve time indexed the entire interview so you can read the questions. For fans of the World of Warcraft game, make sure to watch his answer six minutes in. You’ll love it. Also, make sure to check back for a ton of other red carpet interviews. - How has the last few months been for him. Says he has been reading scripts and working on a treatment for the World of Warcraft
- :35 Does he pay attention to the online rumors about what he is attached to
- 1:00 – Lots of talk that he might do The Hobbit.
- 1:25 – What will be his next film. Says he has read the script Oz. Not sure he will do the film
- 2:00 – World of Warcraft. What most excites him as a filmmaker – talks about the monsters, landscapes, performing spells.
- 2:45 – Does the film take place in the real world or just in the game. Says they have a 40 page treatment for the film
- 3:30 – Why is video game to film such a tough transition
- 4:15 – he really knows his characters
- 4:40 – Will the movie just take place in the World of Warcraft or will people be in the real world. Says it is ALL in the World of Warcraft
- 5:40 – How does he decide what he wants to do as his next project. Says he LOVES playing the game.
- 6:00 – Has he ever sat and played the game from morning to night. Tells a great story about his characters and the game. Fans are going to love what he says.
- 6:50 – Is the studio enthusiastic about the movie. Says it’s Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros.
- 7:30 – Does he have other projects he is thinking about or is it just WOW and OZ?
- 8:15 – Will he make another film like Drag Me to Hell or is he done with that genre

Excellent interview! He was so gracious to let you both banter him with question for 11 minutes. You could tell he was getting a little uncomfortable towards the end, wanting to cut it off, but what a cool guy. Thanks for the interview Frosty!
Seems like a cool guy, definitely socially awkward though. I'm hoping that they can get at least a good trilogy out of Arthas from Warcraft 3 because he really is such a tragic hero and part of the irony is that he becomes, what he started out hating, because of his desire to do anything to beat the Demons. There is so much material the only thing I'm worried about is it being too dense with characters for the average movie goer. Can't wait to see the inevitable Bruce Campbell cameo.

Hellboy 2 and Pans labyrinth were amazing. If this dude writes and directs Warcraft it will be amazing. His imagination and visual perception make things really out there.

I have seen many videos of Sam dealing with Journalists, and he's usually very casual, soft spoken guy, sometimes funny. I noticed that he usually does not give too much details about his future projects, and at one point maybe he couldn't give that too much answers while standing in a awards, but he did even though it is obvious most of film talk right now is very limited and mostly at an early stage. But, I agree with you… and a great interview!

For serious, why would somebody say the best are Spider-Man. Raimi is known for MUCH better films within the movie goer community.
Great interview, but him grinding to lvl72 isn't that amazing lol. I mean, to be a real WoW player you have to have a lvl80 (I have 4), but he is a busy man and I wish I could kick WoW so I could do something much more productive and creative like what he does; the fact that he even devotes the time to WoW to level that much is an accomplishment and an honor for Blizzard.
Thanks for mentioning Drag Me To Hell btw, that movie was amazing; it was nice to see him go back to his horror/comedy days the movie was so well done and entertaining it is one of my top 50 films.
[P.S my main character has 186 days (24 hours each day) of game-play. Not even including the other characters, I've probably put more than a year of my life into the game in the last 4 years.]
Lol, try 40m AQ that's much more epic.
The hardest part for Raimi will be to develop a progressive story within the lore of Warcraft (since it is so well defined it will be difficult). 25m raids will probably be the end battle scene.
I'm actually pretty interested in seeing this movie even though I haven't played WoW in like 2 years. After raiding for so long, you just get burned out on the farm everyday and not seeing your friends and family…lol. Never got a chance to play Wrath of the Lich King, but hopefully he includes some Arthas in there somewhere.

Like Lord of the Rings the Spider Man films have alot of flaws, but it also showed people fantasy films can be really good with a-lost cast and drama and all the films on their wake have been all the better for it.
I want to see that cool Paladin with a warhammer go facerolling into Scourge and then bubble hearthing. That'd be the most awesome part of the movie!

Thank god someone with a brain. Hjortkron hit the target on the nose. Sorry there won't be an end battle scene with player names and levels hovering over their heads in a cinematic movie. You won't see someone running in place because they lagged out during a fight scene. And you certainly won't see a fist pumping gnome swinging a sword that's 10x the size of his body, well you might see that actually that would probably be kind of sick. But it's going to be it's own story a part from what happens in WoW, I heard a rumor that the timeline takes place between the events of warcraft 3 the frozen throne and the beginning of the WoW storyline but hey that could change. Definitely expect to see lots of the mythical characters from the WoW universe playing their roles. Sorry your asian buddy that plays his human deathknight in a 2800 rated 3's team won't be there.
