The big sci-fi release of the summer has come and gone, and now it’s time to look at what the rest of these next few “big movie” months have to offer.  Buried between the animated fare and superhero pics is the next film from director Oliver Stone: the crime drama Savages.  While Stone has been relatively off his game for the past few years, Savages looks to be a return to the gritty crime-filled pics of his earlier career.  The story centers on two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins (Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson) who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel.

As part of the film’s marketing campaign, a slew of “interrogation” videos have landed online.  They feature the principal characters of the film in an interrogation environment, and it gives us a chance to get to know these guys a bit more.  Hit the jump to take a look.  The film also stars Salma Hayek, Benicio Del Toro, John Travolta and Uma ThurmanSavages opens on July 6th.

savages-movie-posterHere’s the synopsis for Savages:

Three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the screen with the ferocious thriller Savages, featuring the all-star ensemble cast of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir.  The film is based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel that was named one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010.

Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry—raising some of the best marijuana ever developed.  They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Lively).  Life is idyllic in their Southern California town…until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them.

When the merciless head of the BC, Elena (Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bond among these three friends, Ben and Chon—with the reluctant, slippery assistance of a dirty DEA agent (Travolta)—wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel.  And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.

Sounds abit like Oliver Stones voice offscreen asking the questions.

Man, how sad would it be if somehow (despite the indy budget) THIS Taylor Kitsch movie underperformed as well . . . . .cause at that point, it would be PRETTY hard to blame writing or direction for any of his bombs.

FNL was never a hit either, What’s your point?

    • Stephens

It’s going to happen. Can’t you just feel it? First of all it’s an R rated movie and R rated movies hardly ever have huge box office numbers (excluding Prometheus which had a massive marketing campaign, a built in following with the Alien prequel premise, and star power to boot), second it’s going up against Spiderman, and third Oliver Stone hasn’t made a decent movie in over a decade. That being said, I loved the book, I actually like Taylor Kitsch, and am rooting for this to be a hit as much as I know it won’t be.

it is going against Amazing Spider-man so yeah I do expected to underperformed.

Kitsch trolls are so predictable and boring. There’s a million crappy reality stars and the like to get your hate on, dude. Go find one, or better yet get a life.

And how many of those reality tv stars get put in 200 mil blockbusters? If he had kept to tv land, where his place is, he wouldn’t be having ‘trolls’.
