CBS Films, Lionsgate, and eOne have released the first official, full-length Scary Stories to Tell I the Dark trailer. The film is based on the series of spooky short stories by Alvin Schwartz and takes place in 1968, revolving around a young girl with horrible secrets who lives in a mansion on the edge of town. A group of teenagers stumble upon the mansion, and are then led to discover the true horrors that await.

André Øvredal (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) directs from a screenplay by Dan Hageman & Kevin Hageman (Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu), with a “story by” credit to Guillermo del Toro and Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Saw IV, V, and VI). Del Toro also produced the film.

This looks super creepy! I know these books scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, and it looks like they've kind of made a hardcore Goosebumps with a book as the cause of terrors making their way into the real world. I don't know how they'll tie the full plot together with different creatures causing different terrors, but I'm curious to see what Øvredal does with this movie. At the very least, I know I'm gonna have nightmares for at least a week because of that damn spider leg.

Check out the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trailer below. The film stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark opens in theaters on August 9th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark:

It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind...but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.
