Could Scoot McNairy Be Playing The Flash in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE?

     August 19, 2014

Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have been doing a wonderful job of keeping the specifics of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice under wraps while also providing fans with enough information/teases to keep them happy.  The film doesn’t open until March 2016, but we’ve had regular doses of minor reveals for the past few months, and we’ve already seen official looks at Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman.  By and large, Snyder and WB have kept people pretty satisfied.  That being said, there’s always room for speculation, which brings us to today’s curious matter.  A new Batman v Superman set photo has surfaced that has people wondering about the nature of actor Scoot McNairy’s role in the film, as it looks possible that he could be playing none other than Barry Allen aka The Flash in this pre-Justice League feature.  More after the jump.

Earlier today, BatmanNews posted a set photo that showed McNairy wearing an otherwise normal business suit that was cut off just below the knee and replaced with a bright green fabric—the kind of green fabric that is used for digital replacement.  It’s impossible to know for sure why McNairy is wearing this material.  Could be mechanical legs, could be part of a complex visual effects shot, or it could be in support of making McNairy’s legs move very, very quickly.

the-flash-batman-v-supermanSome began speculating that this set photo provides evidence that McNairy could be playing The Flash in Dawn of Justice, and if this news were indeed true, it would mean that McNairy has joined the DC Cinematic Universe for the long haul.  Warner Bros. previously announced a slew of release dates for untitled DC adaptations, but you can bet that The Flash will be one of those.  We know that Batman v Superman is being used as an entry point for the larger DC universe as a whole, with introductions planned for Aquaman, and Cyborg for certain, and now Badass Digest is hearing that The Flash is also poised to be introduced in the film as well.

Again, there’s absolutely no confirmation that McNairy is playing The Flash, but if what this set photo seems to indicate turns out to be true, I will be elated.  McNairy has been doing outstanding work in supporting turns for years now in films like Killing Them Softly and Argo, and he turned in a swell lead performance in Monsters.  If he’s being given the opportunity to lead a superhero movie all his own, then that is fantastic news.  He’s currently starring on the AMC drama series Halt and Catch Fire, but low ratings and mediocre reviews may keep that one from getting a second season.

It will likely be sometime before we find out for sure who McNairy is playing, but if Warner Bros. confirms his casting as The Flash, that’s one more indication as to how they plan to differentiate their DC Universe from Marvel’s series of films.  It would also be further confirmation that, however much fans might want it to be true, the DC TV Universe on The CW has essentially nothing to do with the feature film side of things.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theaters on March 26, 2016.
