Could Scoot McNairy Be Playing The Flash in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE?

Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have been doing a wonderful job of keeping the specifics of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice under wraps while also providing fans with enough information/teases to keep them happy.  The film doesn’t open until March 2016, but we’ve had regular doses of minor reveals for the past few months, and we’ve already seen official looks at Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman.  By and large, Snyder and WB have kept people pretty satisfied.  That being said, there’s always room for speculation, which brings us to today’s curious matter.  A new Batman v Superman set photo has surfaced that has people wondering about the nature of actor Scoot McNairy’s role in the film, as it looks possible that he could be playing none other than Barry Allen aka The Flash in this pre-Justice League feature.  More after the jump.

Earlier today, BatmanNews posted a set photo that showed McNairy wearing an otherwise normal business suit that was cut off just below the knee and replaced with a bright green fabric—the kind of green fabric that is used for digital replacement.  It’s impossible to know for sure why McNairy is wearing this material.  Could be mechanical legs, could be part of a complex visual effects shot, or it could be in support of making McNairy’s legs move very, very quickly.

the-flash-batman-v-supermanSome began speculating that this set photo provides evidence that McNairy could be playing The Flash in Dawn of Justice, and if this news were indeed true, it would mean that McNairy has joined the DC Cinematic Universe for the long haul.  Warner Bros. previously announced a slew of release dates for untitled DC adaptations, but you can bet that The Flash will be one of those.  We know that Batman v Superman is being used as an entry point for the larger DC universe as a whole, with introductions planned for Aquaman, and Cyborg for certain, and now Badass Digest is hearing that The Flash is also poised to be introduced in the film as well.

Again, there’s absolutely no confirmation that McNairy is playing The Flash, but if what this set photo seems to indicate turns out to be true, I will be elated.  McNairy has been doing outstanding work in supporting turns for years now in films like Killing Them Softly and Argo, and he turned in a swell lead performance in Monsters.  If he’s being given the opportunity to lead a superhero movie all his own, then that is fantastic news.  He’s currently starring on the AMC drama series Halt and Catch Fire, but low ratings and mediocre reviews may keep that one from getting a second season.

It will likely be sometime before we find out for sure who McNairy is playing, but if Warner Bros. confirms his casting as The Flash, that’s one more indication as to how they plan to differentiate their DC Universe from Marvel’s series of films.  It would also be further confirmation that, however much fans might want it to be true, the DC TV Universe on The CW has essentially nothing to do with the feature film side of things.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theaters on March 26, 2016.

    I think that’s a huge stretch!

  • Jonboy

I was rooting for Ben Affleck..now I have another reason… Still.. Man of Steel was a load of hogwash.. But if this guy’s the Flash.. I’m sold..

    • Mezmero

How was it LMMFAO “HOG WASH”? Who says that still? It’s the only reason you will ever see a JL movie it was filled with action the kind of action I always thought Superman is about. You want a boring movie with just talking and more talking and 20% action? Well that was Superman Returns and it sucked balls because he had no one to fight on his level all they had to do was use Kriptonyte and they put him in a hospital bed for the last 20mins. You should’ve stayed home gramps.

      • https://soundcloud.com/soup_herman soup, herman?

Poppycock! MoS was indeed hogwash – dull, incoherent and vapid, but with some aspects of potential. Hopefully DoJ will fix a lot of the script/dialogue/character logic issues and make people go back to MoS with an added context.

      • Jonboy

Sorry young man.. but I literally yawned through the action sequences.. that’s what I end up doing for a lot of Zack Snyder movies.. they’re spectacular but just so long and takes up more time than story.. I read somewhere that his work has Intensity more than depth.. I would have to agree.. plus the direction they took was to make Superman learn from his mistakes which is a huge opposite to a boy brought up with good morales from a small town.. which is what the comics make him.. Maybe that’s why Jonathan Kent was just sooo stupid… No wonder Superman had to crack Zods neck instead of just covering his eyes.. I don’t care if he killed.. I’m not even that big a fan to care, but.. in the comics he was raised well to know how to deal with bullies.. in this movie he gets screamed at for saving a bunch of kids.. That should’ve been the reason why Jor-El sends him to earth.. to learn our values not to save humanity from themselves..

        P.S. it’s Mr.Gramps to you sonny..

Man of Steel had its issues, it wasn`t a great movie, and Superman Returns wasn`t as awful as people make it out to be (but the inclusion of his son did suck pretty bad), you need to bouild up the plot and the characters in order to have action sequences that actually carry some weight instead of a bunch of guys trowing punches and let it all be special effects, Superman action scenes were actually pretty weak, they should have included more character development and less fighting, the final act was endless.

  • SadBatman

McNairy’s not a bad actor, but he’s not Barry Allen. I know this pic has nothing to do with the Flash and all of this is just wild speculation, but really, that would just be another terrible casting decision.

    • Verbal Kent

Arm chair casting directors are just sad.

      • SadBatman

I’ll have you know I was sitting on a stool when I wrote that.

    • Your_Mama1

If he’s playing Dick Grayson or the Flash, then I’ve lost all faith in the film because that is freaking awful casting. He’s not nice-looking and he’s old, 36 I believe. Wow, nobody on this film knows what they’re doing. It’s unbelievable. Go ahead, bring on the hate. “He’s a good actor!” Yes, Cumberbatch is a good actor as well but that doesn’t mean you cast him as the Flash. Ridiculous. I’m sorry but that’s how I feel.

What are talking about Batman is in his 50′s in this he is the oldest. Why would he be bad choice if you haven’t seen the movie yet or anybody else yet for that matter.

  • bidi

i could get behind him as the Flash, but i think this is just wild speculation. it doesn’t make sense for his legs to be green only beneath the knees if it is indeed for showing him run super fast. anatomically that just does not work. again, i wouldn’t have a problem with him being the Flash, but this is just grasping at straws at this point

    • Verbal Kent

“That just does not work”? WTF are you talking about?

      • bidi

so from his hip to his knees he’ll move normally, but from the knee down it’ll be super fast? if that’s what they were using the green leggings for then i would assume they would cover his entire leg. that makes WAY more sense than just this half stuff

      • https://soundcloud.com/soup_herman soup, herman?

Maybe the shot is after he’s been running and his trousers bottoms are on fire?

      • Tyler Bush

Or he’s just a lesser character that gets his legs blown off. Haha

      • SadBatman

        Science.

      • Verbal Kent

        You’re doing it wrong.

    • SadBatman

If he were the Flash, everyone would be behind him.

      • FlashmanBeyond

“Nothing goes in front of me. I move too fast.”

  • bidi

also, at this point, what are the chances we see the Rock pop up in this movie?

    • Tyler Bush

Not very likely. He is being speculated as being Black Adam, but not til a later movie

  • astnmartin23

Anyone know who is or should play John Jones/Martian Manhunter? cause we all know that’s next. Mine as well just put everyone from the JL in the movie.

    • GrimReaper07

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Martian Manhunter probably won’t be in the Justice League movie.

      • astnmartin23

Ya you’d think that considering his character is something to explain kinda, but for some reason I feel they’ll throw it in.

      • GrimReaper07

I just feel the character is too little known and “weird” for WB to put him in the first Justice League film.

    • NICK НΛRT

you know its J’onn J’onzz, not John Jones, right?

      • astnmartin23

Do your research, it can be spelled either way… J’onn J’onzz is the martian way, John Jones is the human way. no need to be an asshole.

      • mattinacan

he doesn’t really seem to be an asshole

    • Tyler Bush

With the fact that they have already cast Cyborg, I don’t think Martian Manhunter will make any appearance.

  • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Solid choice! If he is playing the Flash I wonder which Flash he will be portraying? Wally West or Barry Allen? I hope Wally West. It would be kind of cool to have a follow up film with a Flash movie that is a prequel about Barry Allen and showing his death and have Wally handle the reigns at the end – all set at the time when Zod announces his arrival.
It’s similiar to Goyer’s original script for the Flash that he wrote a few years ago when Ryan Reynolds was attached to the role in ’04 w just a little tweaking to help fit into their shared universe approach.
Although I feel that most people don’t like Goyer, I think as a story teller he is great. I just find his screenplays to be mediocure as he’s terrible at dialogue. But his screenplay for the Flash was a really great script that just needed fine tuning.

  • DoremusJessup

If true, that means McNairy will have the most acting chops out of everybody in the Justice League (besides Affleck). They need more real actors, not just beefy models to put in jumpsuits. Too many stiffs.

    • Mezmero

Sure you say that now so I will follow you so I can gloat when you say it’s better than Avengers. Because that’s what you will say and I know you will.

      • DoremusJessup

Deal. I really did like Man of Steel, too. Just haven’t been blown away by their decision-making since.

  • rajv

So he is the nighthawk and the flash?

  • Colonel_Neville_Wraithchild

if the point of those socks was to create the effect of fast moving legs wouldn’t he be using green gloves also? i mean, the flash also uses his arms when he’s sprinting…

  • Guest

Has Collider ever Collided with the truth?

  • Guest

Maybe his character just gets his legs cut off in the movie?

    • SuperGuest

Exactly. He most likely plays a minor supporting character who gets his legs crushed/severed. There is absolutely no evidence that he is playing The Flash.

  • https://soundcloud.com/soup_herman soup, herman?

I can see it. I can also see Jena Malone as Robin. Crap…am…am I getting my hopes up?! No!

    • Danny Mac

      lol – my bad

He lost his legs (not “He got his lost his legs”)

      • Guest

        #STFU

      • Jonboy

That’s the best guess yet. I wonder though are there any legless characters in the DC universe

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Legless Joe – Superman’s archnemesis. Then there’s Legless Luthor, but it couldn’t be him.

      • Mezmero

Lmao I got to admit that was funny

      • Daniel O’Reilly

You can modify your posts by clicking “Edit.”

    • brNdon

Yea! he probably has cybernetic legs from STAR labs or something that leads into Cyborg’s origin.

    • McDanny

Or CG legs. My bet is, he will be playing Metallo.

  • Fabdex

If they wanted to use “green” to make it easier to “erase” his legs, he’d be wearing green pants. it’s more likely that, at some point in the scene he’s shooting, he rolls up his pants to reveal “weird legs”. Maybe robotic. Maybe alien. I’m guessing he’s a Skrull (just kidding, of course).

  • Verbal Kent

One of the dumbest articles ever written. I mean IGN level dumb. Get it together, Collider.

  • Jamesy

Could be Flash, although I doubt it. Could be Metallo, but my guess is that’s Cullen Mulvey’s role. More likely that he’s playing a citizen/employee of Wayne or Luthor, his legs get severely injured during the Metropolis destruction, hence the green undergarment. He then goes on to be a hater of Superman, could be Luthor’s poster boy who is on his side “He’s an alien, can’t be trusted, caused all this destruction”.

  • brNdon

    Maybe he’s playing Oscar Pistorius?

    • https://soundcloud.com/soup_herman soup, herman?

      I LOL’d…maybe too hard.

    • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

      bwahahaha.

  • DEADP00L

If only Gal Gadot wasn’t in this. She has RUINED it for me with her political herka durka.

  • Strong Enough

so stupid to have a TV flash and a movie one. smh

    • dvjason8

Agreed why do they refuse to let the tv actor play the part? Tom Welling should of got Man Of Steel. Cavill made me miss Brandon Routh

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Eh, Welling was/is a bad actor. It worked for him on a campy, subpar TV show, but nowhere else. His acting is really hammy and not just in Smallville.

      • Strong Enough

HELL NO. Fuck Brandon and Tom Welling. they both suck

  • Mixed race rich kid NYC

A white guy playing super hero?
    More Hollywood white washing?
Why can’t a black guy play the flash?
    DC is racist.

Black guys can’t be the Flash because everyone knows black guys can’t run fast.

      • DEADP00L

        Or jump high.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I mean it’s just science. What does he expect us to do?

      • DEADP00L

Wave a magic wand and pray really really really hard to the Herka Durka God.

  • Bizzaro Baig

I’d really hate it if he’d be the flash. Hes a great actor and all but i dont think DC should be going with an older justice league. I personally want a younger cocky, buff, blonde hair flash and a young green lantern. I always thought those two fit together well as friends. just keep batman old and everyone else young.

  • Mezmero

I don’t care really I’m looking forward to this movie, unlike the cry babies. I don’t know anything better to go see besides CAP 3. MOS gets a bad rep for dumb ass reasons and it’s the best DC has brought to the people after how shitty Green Lantern was. But you Fan Dick’s want to call it different because you always had a plan,if that was true you would be in the directors chair. None you have any vision because if you did you would know you need many elements to make movies like this not just what you want but what does everyone want? Everybody is not a FanBoy deal with it or play action figures and call it your own.

Perhaps he’s just some guy who got his legs crushed in that parking garage that blew up in Man of Steel? You know, the parking garage that blew up because Superman just casually hopped over a giant tanker truck that Zod kicked at him instead of stopping it, then idly looked at as it blew up behind him and destroyed the building?

He’s a real hero, and a real alien being.

  • Theodore Trout

Hiring a guy named Scoot to be the Flash, kind of a no-brainer really.
