Universal has announced their 2010 slate of films and with it we now have a date for Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: August 13th.  The tail-end of the summer is a pretty strong position even though the biggest (read: most expensive) films of the year come at the beginning of May and the first and second weeks of July.  August dodges those juggernauts and understands that a good movie, well-marketed, with positive word-of-mouth can get overcome blockbuster fatigue.  I’m not sure how much of a crowd Cera can draw (the verdict seems to be he can only do one character, but I disagree with that opinion), but it’s a stacked cast with a fun premise, and it’s from the co-writer/director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

But Scott Pilgrim will have other opponents than the world on August 13th.  The massive chick-draw of Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love isn’t a threat, but Sylvester Stallone’s B-movie apocalypse The Expendables could provide some competition.  My concern for that film is that it’s irony for the sake of irony (see: Snakes on a Plane).  Perhaps Stallone has made a good movie, but it will be interesting to see which flick comes out on top.  I hope it’s the one that doesn’t star the guy from Over the Top.

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass–and now is back in town–to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past–from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over

dude, stallone is way better than Cera. Your a jerk…”the guy from over the top” he says…what about “the guy from rocky” “the guy from rambo”, “the guy from cop land”…everyone has made a flop or two, but if you can get past that you could actually enjoy a stallone flick. I am not saying the man is the most brilliant actor the world has ever seen, but the man does have a couple of acting chops left in him. So give him credit where its due, he won a damn oscar! (not for acting I know…sheesh!) But seriously, Cera is funny and all, but if I had to pick who to watch on screen, I'll pick Stallone slamming Bull Hurly's arm on the table any day of the week over Cera being the afraid kid that everyone really hopes makes it happen! STALLONE MAKES IT HAPPEN! Who is with me? There has to be someone…and also, Over the top was a great flick…just saying…

    Awesome news, thanks Matt.

I personally can't wait for Scott Pilgrim. That and Iron Man 2 are the only movies which I am really anticipating this summer (but mostly Pilgrim). I love the books and Wright's movies are great. As for Cera, I confess to being a bit fatigued by this “Backlsh(TM)” against him; I actually feel like I want to support the kid this time around. Particularly since he's showing some balls by actually stepping up to sing and perform his own songs and also learning to do stunts/martial arts moves for the fights (apparently he got pretty good per his castmates?).

I really think Pilgrim could be a major summer hit – but it's going to need some healthy marketing as many people still don't know who SP is.

Fuck You, The Expendables is not a B-movie, it will outshine all the Hollywood shit that's floating around.

that's probably one of the most well-thought out and succinct posts I've ever read in any comment section. it actually stunned me. I am, for lack of a better phrase, stunned.
