&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gt&lto:p&gt&ampnbsp&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtI was actually debating not attending ComicCon this year since no more Star Wars movies loom on the horizon.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtWhat’s the point, aside from getting drunk?&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp Al&lt/SPAN&gtthough free booze is a rather enticing draw, I’d be lying if I told you Star Wars played absolutely no role in getting my ass out here.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtI was curious what in the world Steve Sansweet and our good friends at Lucasfilm would have to awe us&ampnbspwith this year.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThe&ampnbspprequel trilogy has come and gone and all the 30&ltSUP&gtth&lt/SUP&gt anniversary stuff is still a short ways off.&ampnbsp What could they have?&lto:p&gt&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gt&lto:p&gt&ampnbsp&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtFirst order of business: The repackaged 2004 Original Trilogy DVDs.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gt“Han Shoots First” buttons were disseminated right before the start of the presentation.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtI turned to the guy seated next to me and whispered cynically, “Yeah, but not in anamorphic 16×9.”&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThis complaint has been raging online ever since the depressing technical details of this old school Star Wars release went public.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtIt sounded&ampnbsptoo good to be true, and it was.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtAnd now it’s obvious Lucasfilm is slightly concerned about possible perceived bad blood, even though they weren’t concerned back when they made the decision to cheap-out on this so-called “bonus feature.”&lto:p&gt&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gt&lto:p&gt&ampnbsp&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtThe first thing we were shown was a sample of this new DVD — the opening crawl (pre-Episode number) from the 1977 original.&ampnbsp This was&ampnbspto demonstrate just how marvelous this bonus DVD&ampnbsplooks and set aside any concern we might have over the quality of these transfers.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThe video&ampnbspprojections in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center are brand new, 16×9, and absolutely stunning.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp&ampnbspI&lt/SPAN&gt watched a number of trailers and film clips during the afternoon and was blown away by the level of quality.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtBut when they put on the new Star Wars DVD… *awkward pause*… Look, I’m one of the biggest Lucas apologists on the planet, but even I have to acknowledge the obvious shortcomings here.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt” align=center&gt&ltA href=”javascript:newWindow(‘/uploads/imageGallery/Star” star_wars_widescreen_dvd__large_.jpg?,?587?,?788?) Wars_dvd&gt&ltIMG title=”Click to enlarge” height=480 src=”http://redsox.collider.com/uploads/imageGallery/Star Wars_dvd/star_wars_widescreen_dvd__small_.jpg” width=354 border=0&gt&lt/A&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltDIV&gtThen Steve Sansweet took the stage.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtI’ve liked Steve’s genuine&ampnbspaffection for this property in the past.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtHe’s a true friend to Star Wars, or at least has been in the past.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtBut when he took the stage, I sensed something funky from the get-go.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtHe launched into what I could only call a tirade about how if you complain about these new DVDs there’s something wrong with you (I’m paraphrasing, of course).&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtHe said that “the little black bars” won’t detract from our enjoyment.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThis part lost me.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThere would be black bars at the top and bottom of the screen anamorphic or not.&ampnbsp I couldn’t tell if he actually believed what he was saying, or if Lucasfilm had shoved an explosive device up his rectum and tossed him out onto stage to feed us what he damn well knows is a bunch of hooey.&ampnbsp The second scenario is probably more likely.&lt/DIV&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltDIV&gt&ampnbsp&lt/DIV&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltDIV&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtIt&ampnbspall seemed like misdirection, the same way Lucasfilm is fixating on Han shooting first (there are far worse offenses&ampnbspin the Special Editions).&ampnbsp So of course, that was exactly the clip he showed next.&ampnbsp And it looked pretty much exactly as you’d expect:&ampnbsp An old transfer of a movie made for laserdisc,&ampnbspzoomed to fit a 16×9 screen.&ampnbsp And he even acknowledged these masters were made specifically for laserdisc.&ampnbsp I’m sorry, but the minute you say the L word, you just lost my dollar.&ampnbsp They did a cheesy fake-out first with the Han/Greedo scene by showing really horrible looking video.&ampnbsp Maybe this was to joke with the audience, as Sansweet suggested, or maybe there was a more sinister intent.&ampnbsp Perhaps this was shown to make the real DVD clip they&ampnbspplayed right after look much better by comparison.&ampnbsp Bottom line, though, none of it looked that great.&ampnbsp It looked okay at best.&ampnbsp&ampnbspBut it’s&ampnbspnowhere near the second coming they want&ampnbspus to think it is.&lto:p&gt&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/DIV&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltDIV&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&ampnbsp&lt/DIV&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gt&lto:p&gt&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtSteve didn’t linger much longer on the DVDs.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtEither you’re going to buy them or you’re not, I guess.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp They shit the bed… we can either sleep in it or not, but it doesn’t look like they’re interested in cleaning the sheets, that’s for sure.&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtIf the DVDs were anything resembling a decent product I’m sure he would have hammered it for another twenty minutes or so.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtBut he wisely chose to move on to the new video game &ltI style=”mso-bidi-font-style: normal”&gtLego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy&lt/I&gt, which actually got a rather enthusiastic reception.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThe trailer was funny and if it’s truly a step up from the successful first Star Wars Lego game, this is sure to please fans.&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtAmong the various other products pimped, previewed and eluded to during the fifty minute presentation was an Indiana Jones and a between-trilogies Star Wars video game.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtBoth games utilize groundbreaking technology called Euphoria that appears to take gaming to a whole new level.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThis was the aspect of the presentation that impressed me the most.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThese games look unbelievable.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThere was also talk about the TV shows, live action and all-CG.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtSansweet made the announcement that the live action show will take place between Episode III and IV, but he apologized for having nothing to show us.&lto:p&gt&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gt&lto:p&gt&ampnbsp&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtAs the presentation grinded on, it was mostly filled with promises… promises that the best is yet to come, that Star Wars is forever, that the Force will be with us, and that there will be even more paraphernalia for us to spend our money on in the very near future.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtIs that really what the Force is all about these days?&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtCommerce?&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtThe mood was definitely ugly toward the end when a disgruntled fan suggested that Lucasfilm is simply taking our money.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtSansweet shot back in a crotchety tone, “You don’t have to buy it.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtNobody’s forcing you.”&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtWhat made this truly hilarious was the fact that he was wearing a ridiculous R2-D2 hat made by a fan.&ampnbsp But&ampnbspit’s significant that&ampnbspsomeone officially from Lucasfilm finally&ampnbspsaid it.&ampnbsp And you know what… he’s right.&ampnbsp We don’t have to buy any of this.&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gt&lto:p&gt&ampnbsp&lt/o:p&gt&lt/SPAN&gt&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
&ltP class=MsoNormal style=”MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt”&gt&ltSPAN style=” FONT-FAMILY: Verdana”&gtToday was pretty much a low point for me and Star Wars.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtI still love the first film dearly, but it’s moments like this that really test my devotion.&ltSPAN style=”mso-spacerun: yes”&gt&ampnbsp &lt/SPAN&gtFor the record, I will not&ampnbspbe buying these repackaged&ampnbspDVDs.&ampnbsp And if any one of you happens to&ampnbspcatch me in line at Target with them this September, be sure to give me a good kick in the Wookies.&lt/P&gt&ltBR&gt
