Wes Craven Believes There Will Be a SCREAM 5

     September 28, 2011

Although Scream 4 served as a helpful reminder that we didn’t really need another Scream movie, apparently not everyone got the message.  Because the film grossed $97 million worldwide off a $40 million budget (plus P&A), director Wes Craven believes Scream 5 could be on the way.  The director tells Movieweb:

The odds are that there will be (a Scream 5). It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be (another sequel). Whether I will be a part of it or not? I don’t know. My contract gives me the first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it.

Back in April 2010, we reported that Craven was already signed for Scream 5 and Scream 6, but it now appears that he simply had first-look deals rather than a firm commitment to helm a new trilogy.  Hit the jump for more details.

Craven also tells MovieWeb that all the movies spring from writer Kevin Williamson:

Kevin Williamson has been the writer since day one. He has been the writer on all of these projects, at least at the beginning of them.  Typically what will happen is that Bob Weinstein or Kevin Williamson will come up with a new idea, and they will pitch it to one or the other. If they both like it, they will toss it around and see if they can develop it into an overarching concept. Then I get the telephone call. They say, “We have something to show you.”

As for Craven getting first look at the next two movies, he explains:

The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.

So where does the next film go?  The problem is that it didn’t seem like Scream 4 was building into a larger storyline as much as it seemed like the emphasis was where it always had been: Who’s the killer and who dies?  There may be some in-no-way subtle commentary on the horror genre, but the reason they keep the script under lock and key isn’t because they’re trying to protect the story, but because they care about protecting the identity of who lives, who dies, and who kills.

Scream 4 was just another generic and derivative horror movie. Emma Roberts shouldn’t have even been in that film. This film series was already repetitious and monotonous. Nothing but a cash grab. And suckers gladly ponied up to watch it. Why do they insist on continuing this tired old franchise?? It’s the same old story over and over. Write something new Hollywood! Wonder when they’ll officially announce Scream 5 and that it will feature the entire casts of Glee, Gossip Girl, Jersey Shore, One Tree Hill and The Only Way Is Essex. Should be a cinch! More cash!

What? You mean the forth entry in a franchise wasn’t the greatest movie ever made but it was successful enough for the studio to want to make another!?!? OMG huge, huge shocker. I’m stunned… Here’s an idea, why don’t we all act like we’ve been awake and paying attention to the habits of the film industry for the past 25-30 yrs. How bout that hmmm? Oh and while were at it can we all agree that different ppl like different sh*t and that’s okay? No need to call ppl suckers or what not just for dropping coin on sumthing they were interested in even if your interests lie elsewhere.

As a fan of Scream 1 and 2 i was looking forward to Scream 4, then i watched it. It was more like fucking Scary Movie than Scream, and Emma Roberts was terrible at the end, corny as hell.

      Fuk u a hole

    • alex

well jake i think your a fucking hater i disagree i think emma roberts was great

  • Byron

Don’t understand all the hate towards the film, it was a great sequel to the original SCREAM. Though Im not sure where a new trilogy is established in SCREAM 4. Like Stallone accompolished, with ROCKY BALBOA, its best to end on a high note

  • nawtnt

    Scream 4 was just awful.

Okay, I was shocked at who was the main killer at the end but the film didn’t give scares or chills that I had when I watched it as a kid.

Let’s no Scream 5, please no.

  • Alex

I fucken love the scream franchise! On opening night I took 12 friends that never seen the series, and they loved the 4th one, they all want a 5th one! And I hope they do! The 5th one made me jump and had me laughing, it was shocking as well, but they better have the original cast, thats why I loved the fourth one(: & if they make a sixth one they should kill of sydney, cuz itll be a great ending to the series, or at least die in the 5th one

  • Alexandra

I am and always will be a huge fan of the Scream franchise. I was so excited for the 4th installment, it exceded my expectations. I love how they brought back the feeling of the original movie & I loved how they combined the new characters with the orginal. I could only hope as a horror fan they do two more & finally bring this to a close & tie it all together some how & make it have some bigger meaning like they did at the end of scream 3. So I am all for making the next two installments. I am a horror fanatic & love everything about it & I know that true horror movie fans will be just as excited for them as well!

  • Laura

There should be a scream 5 this movie was the best all of those who didn’t like well dont wach the other that might come out lol i know that these movies are not scary but they are intertainment for m lol !!!!!!!!!

  • Joseph

I think scream 4 was pretty damn good!! if you ask me the first three were good as well so if they decide to make a 5th and 6th one that would be awesome but if they decide to make a 6th and its gonna be the last one they make then thats when the sidney character should be killed off. I have to say that wes does an awesome job when it comes to horror movies!! keep up the good work wes and please keep on making those horror movies!!

  • Ashlee!

Scream 4 was great I really home there is a scream 5!

  • Stephanie Gallagher

I loved all Scream movies. My favorite was the 3rd one because it was shocking to see that Sydney had a half-brother and her Mother had a secret life she had no clue of. I knew after the 3rd one that there would be a 4th one but I thought Randys sister was going to be the killer since she appeared in the 3rd one. I told my Mom and sister that there would be a fourth one and it came out :) I was so happy. Though the 4th one had more guts and gore in it then the others but it was still nice. For me, and other Scream fans out there, I hope a 5th and 6th one come out.

  • Guilia Von Houghton

I loved all the scream movies. I am really looking foward to a 5th one. My favourite line “First rule about remakes Jill, don’t f**k with the oringinal”

      Hahaha hell ya

Wes Craven is one of the best film directors out there. If there will be another scream movie, I’m ready! I’ve been a fan of these movies since I was a child, nothing would ever make me hate them. I do admit that disney stars shouldn’t have been in the movie but it was a great twist. As long as Sydney, Gail, and Dewy don’t die; I will continue to loves these movies. Even if they forget a few things now and then! -Ducky.

I love the scream movies soo much and anyone who doesn’t should SHUT THE HELL UP

  • Rebecca

I’ve always loved the scream movies, and 1,2 and 3 were all amazing. But for some reason I feel like scream 4 was the worst out of all of them, the killer wasn’t as interesting and neither were the new characters. Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere were to popular and relevant to be in the movies in my opinion. They don’t fit horror movies, they seem more of a mean girls type. I REALLY want a scream 5 and 6, but I just hope they make the movies more like they used to be. More on the killings, and have more in depth characters. To be honest, if Stu, Billy and Tatum were all back, I would NOT complain.

  • Nick

I hope they do, I love scream! It’s obvious people want it done, so do it!!!

  • Reese

LOVE SCREAM ! but we need to get rid of David Arquette

  • Christian phillips

  • Porten joeseph

for a start u shouldn’t go into the cinema to watch scream if you are under 18. its 18 for a reason, and maybe soon to be 21 depending on censorship rules.
scream 5 will only work if it is part 5. Scream6
    will b the one
