MTV Turning SCREAM Franchise into a TV Series

The people at MTV, who have long decided that their dedication to music is a thing of the past, have found a new niche in teen-centric TV series, especially with their new, Twilight-esesque take on Teen Wolf, which just had its season premiere last night after the MTV Movie Awards (be sure to check out that new footage from The Dark Knight Rises that premiered during the show last night). Now the network has set their sights on a more recent horror property for their next series endeavor as Scream has been lined up to get the TV treatment.

Hit the jump for more.

As of now TV Line says it’s not clear whether any of the film franchise’s creative team like director Wes Craven or writer Kevin Williamson is involved at all. Of course, Williamson is no stranger to TV having created Dawson’s Creek, not to mention being integral to The Vampire Diaries on The CW. Of course, the question is just how the film’s would transfer to the small screen. Each film has dealt with Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott being pursued by a different killer, always taking on the Ghostface moniker. Would the new series follow Prescott again? Or will a new generation of teens find themselves terrorized by the horror film referencing serial killer? There’s the potential for an interesting serial crime drama, but I can’t imagine MTV putting all that much effort into making it something like The Killing or other hit crime dramas

Right now former MTV executives Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley are developing the project, but there’s no talent involved behind the scenes yet. I’d really like to see this series be something more than a cheap attempt and making money off an established franchise, but at MTV, I don’t think there’s much hope. However, I don’t know if MTV’s audiences are the target demographic for a series like this considering Scream 4 only scored just over $38 million at the domestic box office. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this pans out.

  1. Interesting, but the biggest problem I see with this is that what made these movies so memorable is the production team associated with it. From the Director to the DP and the cinematography, it had a very unique atmosphere and style. I hope they recreate it, or it might be something too different.

  2. So we’re going to get a horror show where people talk on the phone… when will they finally cancel Jersey Shore?

  3. Wow.
Let me start by saying I’m a big ol’ Ghostface geek.
    As a HUGE Scream fan.
I’m incredibly disappointed with the Weinstein’s allowing this to happen.
Especially, since Kevin Williamson has his (what looks to be) amazing serial killer show coming up.
What made Scream, Scream, was the language, gore, intelligence that was brought from a fantastic production team and great casting. All of which, I’m doubting will be apparent.
Look, I HOPE TO GOD they make an AMAZING show.
But seeing how they have made Teen Wolf, I doubt they’ll come even close to it.
It will probably be shot just like every one of their sweet 16 “horror/slasher” films.
Will they even have Marco Beltrami have any influence on the score?
    This is honestly annoying.

Only good thing that can come from it is a broadened fanbase that could actually lead to them producing the Scream 5 and 6 that was “planned.”

But seeing as they are going with the TV show, I wouldnt doubt it if they tried to reboot it instead.

I wouldve enjoyed the idea of rebooting the franchise as a tv show if it led to the unused Scream 2 and 3 script/ideas/plans being the middle/end of the season. THAT would be cool. But from what I remember from the original idea for Scream 3 is VERY SIMILAR to Kevin Williamsons new show “The Killing.” (Stu would’ve been running the murders from inside prison.)

Guess we/ll have to wait and see.
Cross our fingers and hope they don’t insult Craven/Williamson/Beltrami.

    • Now if HBO or AMC wanted to do it?!
      Id be ALL over that.
It is more the MTV thing that bums me out.
I don’t think Weinsteins realize the MTV crowd today is way different from 96-99(Original Trilogy)

  4. Well the SCREAM series started to get a serious ‘Scooby Doo’ feeling as it went along….. I guess now as a TV series it can embrace that aspect.

“Let’s see who the killer is guys!”
Takes Ghostface mask off captive killer.
    “Gasp! It’s Old Man Withers!”

  5. I heard Joshua Patrick Dudley, the writer of the Stab movies from StabMovies.com is going to be writing the Scream TV show! That’d be so awesome!
