With director Chris Columbus’ Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief opening this Friday, I was able to talk with screenwriter Craig Titley (Scooby-Doo, Cheaper by the Dozen) about his involvement in the project yesterday afternoon. During the interview, we talked about writing Percy Jackson, his involvement in Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon (he’s written two episodes), and what’s up with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. And just to clarify the 20,000 Leagues story, two competing projects were going at the same time last year, one was at Disney with McG helming, and one was being developed at New Line with Sam Raimi’s company. Titley wrote the New Line one. During the interview he talks about his take on the material and what it’s about.
Watch the interview after the jump:
And one final thing before the interview…I need to come clean. Craig Titley and I have been friends for a number of years, so it’s more of a conversation between friends than a hard hitting interview.

Star Wars CLONE WARS, started off bumpy with the pilot movie, got gradually better with the first half of series 1, then blossomed into something pretty damn good. Series 2 however is nothing short of excellent!
I now prefer it and its style than the prequel films, and wish they would remake the movies in this style. Looks gorgious in hi-def too. If the live action series will be as good as Clone Wars has gotten, I may forgive George for Jar Jar. (Possibly?)
Shouldn't this guy's resume (cheaper by the dozen, scooby-doo) preclude him from ever being asked about future projects?
He is finishing up his dissertation to complete his PhD in mythology…he studied Joseph Campbell (ever heard of him? The godfather of Hollywood storytelling?), Roman, Greek, Indian and American mythology. In my interview he was very honest how this drew a “line in the sand” between his past work as a “hack” (his words) and what he's working on now. Hats off to Craig, he pushed himself “for fun” but also to become a better writer and trust me, we'll be seeing a lot more of him.
What's your resome, Jilm? Can we ask about your future projects?
No way! I had a speech class w/ Craig at EIU, and even though I doubt we ever said two words to each other, he's been sort of a hero to me because he stood up to our arrogant prick of an instructor. Also, he did a killer speech encouraging us to vote for the mere reason that it would make us better than the Russians–well, he said it much better than that; there was confetti and everything. Craig is not a guy easily forgotten.
Bravo to him for his writing success! I can't wait to tell my son that I went to school with the man who wrote the screenplay for Percy Jackson. And I liked Cheaper by the Dozen, and laughed at least five times during Scooby Doo. Ah Clone Wars…once again. bravo.
