In a world where spoilers for Hollywood blockbusters pop up online weeks before the film hits theaters, there is one man who regularly surprises the crap out of us: J.J. Abrams. And it looks like he might be doing it again as a report has hit the net that prints of Iron Man 2 this weekend will have a surprise trailer for a film called Super 8 attached to it and that the film hasn’t even been shot yet! It might be a sequel to Cloverfield, it might not, but Abrams directed the teaser and will not be directing the film.
Would you like to know more? Then hit that jump.
In 2007, Abrams and his Bad Robot team attached a surprise trailer to another huge Paramount film, Transformers. The trailer for Cloverfield came out of nowhere to blow the minds of a world of fanboys. We’re the kind of people who pride themselves on knowing every little piece of movie news and naming a trailer in as few frames as possible. This trailer, however, was something no one online had seen and got everyone talking even after the final credits rolled. Is it a sequel to Lost? Is it a new Godzilla movie? We all had no idea. Abrams was experimenting with a plugged in audience and it worked out perfectly. Cloverfield opened a few months later, in January 2008, and had one of the biggest January openings ever at that time.
It seems as if they are going with the same strategy with Super 8. Even Drew McWeeney, the HitFix reporter who broke the story, struggled with releasing the information. He didn’t want to ruin the surprise for us all.
Has he ruined the surprise? Sure. But just reading this news itself is a surprise and we still don’t know what we are going to see starting at midnight on Thursday. Certainly come back to Collider then to discuss it and let’s hope Iron Man 2 outshines the surprise trailer that’s attached.
