Impressive First Trailer for Ben Stiller’s THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

     July 30, 2013

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Ben Stiller‘s next directorial effort, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.  In the remake of the 1947 film, Stiller stars as the eponymous LIFE Magazine proofreader who, incapable of standing up for himself in the real world, retreats to a fantasy where he becomes his poised, confident opposite.  Trailers these days tend to follow a fairly predictable path, complete with dubstep and “BWAAAM” moments that aim to highlight a particularly exciting and/or expensive sequence.  This trailer for Walter Mitty, however, is brilliantly refreshing, as it attempts to capture the mood and tone of the film with a simple (and haunting) Of Monsters and Men song and minimal dialogue.  It really looks like Stiller has crafted something special here, and this is exactly the kind of film I’m eager to see following a summer filled with studio blockbusters.  I also wouldn’t be surprised if The Secret Life of Walter Mitty turned out to be a major awards contender later this year.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and if you missed Steve’s interview with Stiller and Kristen Wiig from CinemaCon, click here.  The film also stars Sean Penn, Adam Scott, Patton Oswalt, and Shirley MacLaine.  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty opens December 25th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty:

Ben Stiller directs and stars in THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, James Thurber’s classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

wow, the whole trailer was beautiful but when he’s running by all the magazine covers did it for me.

  • Bob

Funny how people have different opinions. Me and my bro saw this trailer in theaters and were like wtf is this crap lol. We just thought it looked like and awful attempt at awards by Ben Stiller lol.

    • zac

its interesting you say, that coz if it said from robert zemeckis, starring tomm hanks and looked exactly the same you would be fine with it but coz it’s stiller i under stand how it can be hard for someone to accept, nevertheless it looks amazing to me

      • Bob

But…thats a much better director and actor…I mean Back to the Future is actually one of my favorite films…but even still I see this trailer and Im like wtf is going on. Just looks like one of those find your life stupid movies.

      • Strong Enough

you don’t like find your life movies?

      • Bob

Well if they look good, this one looks like one of the not good ones. Just looks like its trying to be good.

      • Strong Enough

yeah i see where you are coming from. random shots of fading sun along with indie music. we’ll just have to wait until the reviews

      • Bob

This guy understands what I’m saying. I will admit Im wrong if its good but it looks crappy

      • Tey

Don’t worry! Thank God Transformers 4 is coming out next June!

      • Bob

Just cause I dont wanna see this crap doesnt mean I wanna see transformers 4 moron. I happen to still wanna see film like Twelve Years a Slave for example. But this looks like crap imo.

      • Mike

Do you also wanna see The Butler?

      • Bob

        No, I do not actually.

      • Keith Lipsey

Don’t judge a movie by its “teaser” trailer. You haven’t seen anything other than visuals with music. Maybe you should wait to see the 3rd or 4th trailer before you start making assumptions about the movie.

    • hunjee

      you’re a fn retard “LOL”

  • Marissa Evans

We’ll have to see. I don’t think Ben Stiller is the greatest of directors (even ‘Tropic Thunder’ was really saved by Robert Downey Jr.), not to mention I don’t think he’s that great an actor either. That aside, I still can’t say I’m all that impressed. It looks rather forced, which are the worst kinds of artistic movies to me.
But hey, it might be good. Perhaps even great. I look forward to being proven wrong.

    • Jordan T Bauer

Except TROPIC THUNDER didn’t need to be saved by anyone. It was great all around. And Tom Cruise? Brilliant.

      • Chris

I would not call TC being the best thing in TT – actually the worst, but the only worst.

    • thedudeabides

What? Don’t think he’s a good actor? The man has so many looks! Blue Steel! Ferrari! Le Tigra!

    • Gerard Kennelly

      underrated actor..
      Reality Bites
      Flirting With Disaster
      Mystery Men

      • Tey

    • Bob

Agree 100% on like evreything you said. People just get mad ate when I say it bluntly. Basically it looks like crap. But, I could be wrong.

  • Patrick Campbell

One of my most anticipated films of the year. It looks incredible.

  • 97point6

Hopefully, it doesn’t begin, and end, with this trailer.

  • Adam

Pretty lame that Fox would geo-block this.

  • arian

    pretentious crap

    • Bob

      I agree.

      • Andi

i’m confused why the word “pretentious” is even used here. Is this the default word for non-action oriented films? While this film doesn’t look groundbreaking, I would use “imaginative” over pretentious. It’s not like its asking you to follow a story about worms and pigs and Walden, now is it?

    • VanCity

One thing I’ve realized, people will never be pleased. Everyone whines about Hollywood remakes/sequels, yet you get something that is a bit original, and you still B***h and complain. Can never please the public.

      • feloniousmax

For the record, this is a remake. I’m still going to see it, looks fantastic.

      • Gerard Kennelly
      • Bob

LMAO when he said this was original….it’s a remake…fail.

      • wassup

How old are you, Bob? If you really are older than 12, then that worries me even more. Because 12 years are at times more mature than you seem to be with your comments.

      • Bob

Why? Cause I laugh? Cause I speak my mind and don’t sugarcoat my opinions?

  • Gerard Kennelly
  • Matty

Looks to be in the same vein as the Stiller-produced SUBMARINE. The cinematography is gorgeous in this trailer. The Of Monsters and Men song sure will attract the hipster crowd haha.

  • Chris

My most anticipated movie of the year!
Looks very cool, and Stiller is a great director, esp when he has good material to work with. Remember Tropic Thunder.

There is just something about this trailer I can’t make out! Can any art students tell me? Is it Surrealism or?

  • Tey

I thought only David Fincher is capable of framing films like this but based on the trailer Ben somehow did it too! Slick and clean!
