The first trailer for the apocalyptic dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World has landed. The film stars Steve Carell as a man who sets out with a woman (Keira Knightley) to search for his high-school sweetheart during Earth’s final days. It’s a premise you’d expect from a big budget sci-fi pic or a zany road trip comedy, but the tone on display in this trailer is nothing short of fantastic. Director Lorene Scafaria has populated the flick with a brilliant ensemble, as we see Patton Oswalt, Rob Heubel, Connie Britton, Gillian Jacobs, Rob Corddry, and more pop up in this short trailer alone. There are genuinely funny moments, but an underlying sadness permeates throughout that hints at some strong character work as well. I love the way the apocalypse is tackled here and can’t wait to see more.

Here’s the official synopsis for Seeking a Friend for the End of the World:
Set in a too-near future, a man searches for a meaningful connection as humanity’s last days are at hand. Can he find his greatest love at the worst possible time? As the respective journeys of Dodge and Penny converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks – if not the world’s – brighten.

It’s a good premise for a comedy, but umm…that trailer was lame, not a single laugh throughout and I think we already know where the movie will end up w/ Carell and Knightley’s relationship.
I thought the trailer was pretty funny. Like the premise to, only I don’t get why someone would loot and riot when all the crap you’re going to steal is useless when you get incinerated.
It’s more about those people thinking they can do what they like without repercussions than, oh look I have a new TV.
The tone seems just right to let you laugh and reflect all at once. Trailer played better than the premise to me.
@excpired
I don’t think people loot and riot just for the collection of stuff.
Why does that song seem so haunting? I think it’s from Little Monsters.
Anywayy… not all comedies have to be non-stop jokes, the plot and characters can compensate by making it a well-rounded film.
Looks charming!
Looks like a massive waste of effort. Makes me hope the world does indeed end before it’s released, just to save people from having to sit through it.
OK, Chitwood, your description sounded kinda lame, but the trailer looked excellent. This seems almost tailor made for Carrell’s dead-pan every guy semi-dark humor. Knightly looks like she does a good job as well. I haven’t laughed out loud at a trailer in a very long time, but the cop’s “No.” at the end was great. This seems almost like a Simon Pegg sorta of movie, hopefully it will measure up to Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead.
t – that song is from Little Monsters (at least that is the same exact thought I was having, but couldnt put my finger on it). I hadn’t heard it in god knows how long, it made me really like the trailer…
Which on second thought could be a real mess. It made me think of that Ricky Gervais movie about lying. Great idea, terribly executed.
It looks great. I’ll see it anyway.
What is the song they heard with turntable. Maybe ending song is also same score.
