Focus Features just released the very first trailer for Tarsem Singh's latest, Self/less, a psychological science fiction thriller about a man dying from cancer (Ben Kingsley) who decides to transfer his consciousness into the body of a healthy, younger man (Ryan Reynolds). The procedure works, but he soon comes to realize that "immortality has some side effects."
There's something about the whole consciousness transfer thing that's feeling a little too familiar right now, but if a film's got Singh's name on it, I'm in no matter what. Some of his movies are better than others, but Singh certainly knows how to entertain and compose thoughtful, stunning visuals. My biggest concern with this is whether or not writers Alex and David Pastor can take the concept to a new, believable level that goes beyond what we see in this trailer.
You can check out the first Self/less trailer and the new teaser poster below, and, in case you missed it, click here to take a look at the mysterious cell phone viral marketing campaign that kicked off yesterday for the film. Self/less also stars Matthew Goode, Michelle Dockery, Natalie Martinez, Victor Garber and Derek Luke, and is due in theaters on July 31st.
