Focus Features has released four new clips and five minutes of behind-the-scenes footage for Tarsem Singh‘s latest mind-bender, Self/less, a psychological sci-fi thriller about a dying man (Ben Kingsley) who decides to transfer his consciousness into the body of a healthy, younger man (Ryan Reynolds). The procedure works, but he soon comes to realize that “immortality has some side effects.”

While most of the clips are noticeably lacking in Tarsem's distinct visual opulence, one of them finally reveals a glimpse at that aesthetic panache Tarsem is known for - but seriously, just a glimpse. The glinting gold pillow atop a sterile medical bed both feels like signature Tarsem and fits with the idea that the immortality procedure and "best of the human experience" is exclusively available to those in the highest echelons of society. These clips are also a great reminder that Reynolds is an excellent actor when paired with material that actually gives him something to do. Sharing a role with the great Sir Ben Kingsley is a formidable challenge for any mere mortal and I'm excited to see how Reynolds rises to the occasion.

You can check out the new Self/less clips and behind-the-scenes footage below. The film also stars Matthew GoodeMichelle Dockery, Natalie Martinez, Victor Garber and Derek Luke, and arrives in theaters nationwide July 10th.
