Paramount Pictures has released the first Selma images from director Ava DuVernay’s upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic.  David Oyelowo takes on the role of Dr. King in the film, which recounts the epic, dangerous, and terrifying civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama that resulted in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.  It’s a story that’s both inspiring and heartbreaking, as it evokes humanity at its best and worst.  Oyelowo is joined in the cast by Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Andre Holland, Omar J. Dorsey, Tessa Thompson, Tim Roth, Wendell Pierce, and Colman Domingo.  The film will open in limited release on Christmas Day before expanding nationwide on January 9, 2015.

Selma

“SELMA” is the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic struggle to secure voting rights for all people – a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and led to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Into the Woods

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

Big Hero 6

“Big Hero 6” features brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the CG-animated “Big Hero 6” hits theaters in 3D on Nov. 7, 2014.

Words can’t express my excitement for Selma. It’s just a breath of fresh air to see movies about black figures directed by a black person
(Malcolm X is the greatest biopic ever made for this reason. You can feel the passion of Spike Lee).
(No disrespect to OIiver Stone and Paul Greengrass in regard to their planned MLK biopics, but I have no interest in them)

For some reasons, I can’t watch a black movie directed by another race. It just doesn’t feel sincere. It feels whitewashed, and exploitative to me.

To this day,, I haven’t seen In the color purple, Amistad, Ray, that Mandela biopic last year, The Help,Get On Up or Ali.

One more point: Is it me or this image is giving me a Ferguson kind of vibe with the people with hands behind their back as in Don’t shoot me down

I wasn’t aware this movie was in production, but I’m excited it finally is. They’ve been trying to make it for years. David Oyelowo is an excellent actor, and I think will portray King well. Best Actor nomination perhaps?
