New Image of Jennifer Lawrence in SERENA; Film Gets October 24th UK Release Date, But Remains in Limbo Stateside

Given the popularity of both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper—especially after the one-two punch of Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle—it’s somewhat baffling that director Susanne Bier’s (In a Better World) drama Serena has sat on the shelf for this long.  The movie was shot back in 2012, and since it was completed Bier has found the time to shoot and finish another movie, with Serena still remaining unreleased.  That changes today, though, as StudioCanal has announced that it will be releasing the film internationally this fall, with a UK bow set for October 24th.  Lawrence and Cooper star as a 1920s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry. Infidelity and infertility leads Serena (Lawrence) to plot the murder of George’s (Cooper) illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.

It’s a promising premise with fantastic pedigree, but the fact that it still hasn’t been released in the US despite Lawrence’s starpower is troubling.  Here’s hoping the fininshed feature is a pleasant surprise.  For now, check out a new Serena image featuring Lawrence after the jump, along with release date news for other international territories.

Per StudioCanal, Serena will be released in the UK on October 24th, in France on November 12th, in Australia/New Zealand on November 27th, and in Germany on December 18th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Serena:

North Carolina mountains at the end of the 1920s —George and Serena Pemberton, love-struck newly-weds, begin to build a timber empire. Serena soon proves herself to be equal to any man: overseeing loggers, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. With power and influence now in their hands, the Pembertons refuse to let anyone stand in the way of their inflated love and ambitions. However, once Serena discovers George’s hidden past and faces an unchangeable fate of her own, the Pemberton’s passionate marriage begins to unravel leading toward a dramatic reckoning.

Say what you will about American studios, but if a movie has stars like these and a renowned director but still isn’t finding US distribution, then maybe the movie just isn’t very good…

Finally! I’ve been interested in this for quite some time, and I’m glad they finally decided to release it. But this really does make me wonder as well… why the hell did they wait this long? I hope it won’t turn out to be crap, but one can never be sure.

It stinks simple as, you really think a movie starring jennifer lawrence would take this long to come out?

Maybe it’s stuck in legal limbo. Nobody knows who owns the right to release the film in the United States and foreign countries, and they’re fighting in court. One thing for sure is that StudioCanal owns the British right
    OR
    The movie is laughably bad
    lol

I too have been waiting for this film. I read the book; or at least tried, but finally put it aside as I didn’t like the writing. But the story; the beginning; is very, very dark and both Lawrence and Cooper are bloody, stone-cold killers! Plus, per the director Bier, the movie itself is very dark. That may be part of the problem. I still want to see it as I like Bier’s work and used to really like Lawrence until she started making movies for the masses. Maybe after her enormous success and loved by all she and her people just don’t want audiences to see her in something like this. Who knows? Who cares? Just release it already…even if OnDemand only. I want to see it!

I’m really dying to watch it. It’s certainly not encouraging at all that it took so much time to finally get some release dates but I’d just to watch Jennifer doing something so dark and Susanne Bier is a hell of a talented filmmaker. My expectations are definitely not high at all, but I’d really love to watch it.

I’m not sure how true this is, but from what I’ve heard, a scene of this film had to be redubbed due to sound problems, but Jennifer Lawrence is refusing to record her lines and is apparantly going out of her way to make sure this film isn’t released. Which is surprising if this is true and I really want to know what she would be trying to hide.
