While comic book movie adaptations currently reign supreme, video game adaptations may be the next big thing.  One highly anticipated live-action feature film that takes inspiration from the world of interactive gaming is Sony’s action-adventure picture Uncharted.  Though the project has had such directors as David O. Russell involved, the helm remains vacant.  That could all be about to change, as new reports have director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) in negotiations with the studio.  Hit the jump for more.

seth-gordon-unchartedDeadline reports that Gordon is in negotiations to direct Uncharted, an adaptation of the bestselling PlayStation game series that began with “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.”  The game follows protagonist Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter descended from the famed explorer, Sir Francis Drake.  With the help of journalist Elena Fisher and mentor Victor Sullivan, Drake searches for the lost treasure of El Dorado.

Although Gordon’s last two feature films landed squarely in the R-rated comedy department, his arcade game competition documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters cemented his gamer status.  If a deal is finalized with Gordon directing Uncharted, the production can look forward to casting the principal roles.

A few months back, producer Avi Arad commented on the state of video game movie adaptations, saying that Uncharted would likely be the first of his slate of projects out of the gate:

“I think Uncharted will be very successful. It’s a father and son game. There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft, there are many countries in the world that realised they’re being robbed and they’re trying to recoup these important pieces,” said Arad. “Now, the script has a lot of character [and] I think that has a shot at being the first one [to succeed].”

The news of Gordon being in negotiations is a good sign for the Uncharted adaptation, but directors and stars have already come and gone over the years.  Unfortunately, it’s going to take one really (financially and critically) successful video game movie that launches a lucrative franchise before studios stop being so skittish with pursuing similar projects.
