First Trailer and Poster for SEVENTH SON Starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, and Julianne Moore

     July 10, 2013

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Sergey Bodrov’s fantasy-adventure film Seventh Son.  The plot follows mystical knight Father Gregory (Jeff Bridges) and his apprentice Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) and their fight to defeat the evil witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) and her followers.  The VFX-heavy trailer promises a large-scale entry into the fantasy genre and a goofy Jeff Bridges performance, but despite the impressive cast (and Big Lebowski reunion), it’s tough to tell whether this one will be a winner.  The genre is a tough one to crack, and it’s unclear if Warner Bros. has something more substantial than recent flops like Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters or The Brothers Grimm in store for audiences.  The pic’s release date was recently moved (again) from this coming October to January due to delays in the visual effects process, but a push to January is rarely the best of signs.  Here’s hoping Seventh Son proves to be a pleasant surprise.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer and to check out the poster.  The film also stars Kit Harington, Alicia Vikander, Djimon Hounsou, Olivia Williams, and Antje Traue.  Seventh Son opens on January 17, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Seventh Son:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

I wish I could trade both this and Ender’s Game for an adaptation of Card’s Seventh Son, the first chapter in the Alvin Maker saga. Now that’s a movie I want to see.

  • The Hobbit

I never Knew Hansel & Gretel: WitchHunters was flop….It earned $ 225 Million with a production Budget of $ 50 miilion….FLop???? Maybe a Domestic Flop

    • Jeremy D

Domestically it earned 55 million, which is still somewhat of a profit.

Throw in the fact a sequel is in the works, I’d say it was a success! Plus it was surprisingly enjoyable. We’ll see how Seventh Son does…

  • Christian

this may not end up being good, but Jeff Bridges always gets the benefit of the doubt from me (most of the time lol).

  • Nomis1700

Hm, this doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would be.

Jeff Bridges sounds like he’s re-doing Rooster Cogburn in True Grit! HA!HA!HA!

  • JJ

Way to mention that this movie is based on a BOOK SERIES called The Spook’s Apprentice. Key detail…

  • Emile

This looks really bad, the books where what I may call “horror” (even though they were not for adult)… what is this action-holleyhoo-rip-off-of-any-hollywood-movie-made-in-the-ast-5-years?

  • Oolie zool

I’ve always enjoyed the Brothers Grimm and while I haven’t seen Hansel and Gretel yet, I will, because Gemma Arterton in skin tight leather and you know, killing demons and stuff… is that wrong of me?

The trailer doesn’t look bad, but Jeff Bridges trying hard to not sound like Jeff Bridges… doesn’t work.
