This past summer, WE tv ordered an American version of the British series Sex Box, where -- yes -- couples have sex in a box.  In front of an audience.  The box is soundproof and you can't see into it, but after the deed is done, the couples will emerge in their robes or pajamas and discuss everything that just happened in front of several panelists, and a live studio audience.  Because that is definitely the best place to talk about intimacy issues.

Many of you may be getting college roommate flashbacks right now, and Sex Box looks to be just as gross and awkward as that kind of run-in.  (Also of note, one of the guys in the Sex Box trailer looks like Bill Hader).  But will it be sexy?  Ehhhh … don't tune in looking to see (or hear?) any actual sexy times.  You'll still need HBO for that.

According to WE tv president Marc Juris,

“Sex Box is one of the most unique and compelling show concepts we’ve ever seen, and we can’t wait to bring it to WE tv. Our featured couples will get a once-in-a-lifetime experience, while our viewers will get the kind of bold, break-through-the-clutter programming they increasingly associate with WE tv.”

All of the pillow talk and none of the sex?  You'd be better off watching, well, Pillow Talk.

According to a press release, the panel will feature Beverly Hills relationship psychotherapist Dr. Fran Walfish and Dr. Chris Donaghue PhD, a licensed clinical therapist and nationally certified sex therapist.  The series will also include comedian and podcaster Danielle Stewart.  (The English version got Dan Savage, by the way, and not even he could apparently make things interesting).

This is all worth keeping in mind when considering that WE tv recently decided not to renew its excellent, compelling crime drama The Divide, which showed immense promise and ended its first (and now only) season with several major cliffhangers.  But hey, people are having sex in boxes on TV instead so, that's something.

Sex Box will premiere Friday, February 27th at 10 p.m. on WE tv.
