Shane Black Might Write and Direct IRON MAN 3

Well, Marvel certainly wasted no time in starting their search for a replacement once Jon Favreau announced he wouldn’t be returning to the Iron Man franchise to direct the third installment. Marvel is meeting with a number of directors to find their man, but one of those directors in contention is now known: Shane Black. Black is the screenwriter behind Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, and most recently wrote and directed the fantastic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, starring Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr.

With Black being in contention, this shows that Marvel is certainly thinking outside the box. His rapport with RDJ definitely helps his chances, but he’s never really tackled anything this large-scale before (then again, neither had Favreau). I’m willing to bet Black would make one hell of an entertaining film, so I’m all for it. THR is quick to point out that this does not mean that Black is a sure thing to helm Iron Man 3, but he has met with the studio and given them his take on the third film. Iron Man 2 definitely had its problems, and felt much more like a trailer for The Avengers than a film all its own. Here’s hoping Marvel finds someone who can put their own spin on the flick while also making it a great stand-alone effort. Iron Man 3 is set to be released on May 3, 2013.

  1. Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 noticeably sucked because Shane Black wasn’t apart of them. Gibson’s character went from a bad ass DARKKKK assassin to just a regular goofy cop.

Bringing Shane Black on board is an upgrade. The only Directors who would be better would be James Cameron or Spielberg which Marvel is not going to get. I hope Marvel doesn’t let him slip through there fingers.

  2. KKBB came out 6 years ago so that ain’t recent. But Shane is old school so maybe he can make it rain. Sounds interesting. However, this stuff can change so salt should be held tight in the hand.

  3. The reason Iron Man 2 seemed more like a trailer for The Avengers was because of Marvel’s meddling, which is also why Favreau declined to do Iron Man 3.

    • I agree. Favreau has alluded to that fact multiple times, and RDJ said as much in that GQ (I think) piece he did back when the movie came out.

  4. We’re all gonna be dead come the year 2013! :(

Barring that, the first Iron Man was awesome because it had a good story and great effects intermingling. I hope the 3rd installment will deliver the same! :)

  5. ^they misinterpreted the Myan calendar by 50 some odd years btw. So unless your talking about another catastrophic event, or we blow ourselves up we should be around to see this.
