SHANGHAI International Trailer Staring John Cusack, Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, and Ken Watanbe

After sitting on the shelf for over two years, the period crime-thriller Shanghai finally has a trailer.  For most of it, I was wondering why the flick was kept from theaters for so long.  It has tight premise, exotic locale, solid actors, and a nice look to it.  Then the trailer had the courtesy to give away almost the entire flick and what appears to be the ending looks stupid beyond all reason.  So if you want to see a film that you’ll like for maybe two-thirds of it and then check out due because of the climax, Shanghai looks like the movie for you.

Shanghai stars John Cusack, Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, and Ken Watanabe. Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the synopsis.  The film is set to be released in China on June 17th and sometime in the US this September.

Here’s the synopsis:

Nothing is what it seems in this Casablanca-style international thriller set in the ancient Chinese city a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor. U.S. Secret Agent Paul Soames (John Cusack) has just arrived to investigate the murder of his best friend, only to become quickly immersed in a web of conspiracy and lies that beset the city. Shadowed by a Japanese intelligence officer Tanaka (Ken Watanabe), Soames’ investigation quickly centers on a charismatic local gangster, Anthony Lanting (Chow Yun-Fat) – and Lanting’s beautiful wife, Anna (Gong Li). Before long, Soames and Anna are involved in an affair that will put everything they have at stake. As national loyalties are traded fast-and-loose for those of the heart, Soames and Anna must race to solve the mystery and make it out of occupied China before the city’s collapse.
