Dwayne Johnson Teases Possible SHAZAM Movie; Announcement Coming at Comic-Con?

     July 21, 2014

Okay.  So we know that DC and Warner Bros. would really like to play some catchup with Marvel and Disney.  Man of Steel didn’t do especially well, so they’re moving full steam ahead into the Avengers-esque territory of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, which will be shot back-to-back by Zack Snyder.

But wouldn’t it be nice if they put some solo movies in there too?  There were some rumors last month about a potentially leaked Warner Bros. schedule for Comic-Con this week that included a Wonder Woman movie, a Sandman movie and a Shazam movie.  And it’s the latter film that Dwayne Johnson seems to be hinting at.  Hit the jump for more on a possible Shazam movie starring Dwayne Johnson.

dwayne-johnson-shazamJohnson told Total Film:

“There’s a character out there that we’re going to announce very soon that I’m going to play.  And, I’ll just say this… he has the power of Superman.  And it’s not Green Lantern.  Believe me, he was a character I wanted to play but there was already another version of Green Lantern and so now we’ve gone in a different direction.  But this character has the power of Superman.  He can throw down.  Just say the word.  That’s all I’m going to say.”

We all know (okay, I just found out) that Shazam’s name is an acronym that has changed over time but certainly mentions “the strength of” various ancient heroes and deities.  Maybe that’s where this “strength of Superman” line comes in?  By “soon”, I will somewhat safely assume that we will get a verification on this by the time Warner Bros. has ended ots panel at SDCC.  That would certainly be the time to go into full-steam hype mode.

What do you think?  Would Dwayne Johnson make a good Shazam?  Or were you holding out for someone else?

Eh, okay. Don’t see why that horrible Green Lantern movie should preclude him playing Stewart though. He’d have been good.

    • Batman

He’s too big (in size) for John Stewart.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I don’t think he’s too big for John Stewart, I think the real problem is that he’d dwarf both Affleck and Cavill in stature and make them look puny.

      • Vadar

Guys, who cares about John Stewart. That character is to uptight and square. I do agree that the Rock is huge, he’s at Pro Bodybuilder size. He’d be an awesome Shazam. They don’t even have to connect it to other DC movies for people to go and see it. Since his name is so huge.

It’s great seeing more ethnicities like half black and half Samoan Dwayne and half black Vin Diesal. These mixed breed great actors show what America is really like in 2014 and it brings in more of a modern audience.

      • K-Money

The term “mixed breed” is derogatory. And besides, studios now cast against race. Which means that John Stewart would have to be caucasian.

    • Slade

Idris Elba would be a better John Stewart.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

It’s funny, because when I read this I thought, ‘Elba would be great, but he seems so world weary and kind of worn down in all the roles he plays – I wonder how much older than Johnson he is.’ He’s actually 4 months younger than Johnson – which I still don’t believe, but it’s true. He just seems older and more sullen. It’s probably just because of the roles he’s played that it leaves that impression, he’d probably be great.

      • Slade

Yeah, his worn and weary look would work well for a more seasoned John Stewart (I’m basing my image of him off of the character in the JLA TV show) and it looks like thats what they are aiming for with the characters in this DC Cinematic Universe.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

If DC would just do a straight up adaptation of Timm’s animated series, I’d be thrilled. But seriously, honestly, would you have guessed Elba was younger than Johnson? I mean really?

  • Strong Enough

He creeped me the fuck out in Kingdom Come. That smile gave me nightmares and i wet my bed

When he kept hitting Superman with the lightning was disturbing too. just too much…

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

His smile and your bed wetting are unrelated and you know it.

      • Strong Enough

It certainly didn’t help seeing the smile. I mean before it was bad. a little tinkle here and there but afterwards, oh boy.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Okay, that’s fair. His smile *is* a known diuretic.

  • cloud720

    I think it is Darkseid.

  • milo

“Just say the word” seems like an obvious hint considering the powers are summoned by saying the word SHAZAM.

And for the record the character’s name isn’t Shazam, it’s Captain Marvel although the movie would likely be called Shazam!

John August worked on drafts of a potential SHAZAM movie years ago, I wonder if they’d use any of his material or start from scratch.

    • milo

Ah, now I see that DC renamed the character SHAZAM due to lawsuits with Marvel. Sorry for the out of date info.

      • TrekBeatTK

Wait, what? I must have been living under a rock. That’s awful! He must be called Captain Marvel! That way they can be the first to have a “Captain Marvel” character in the movies. Meanwhile, Marvel can be the first to have a “Doctor Strange” in the movies.

I can’t get used to calling him Shazam. I’ll just confuse him with Shazaam, the magical genie (not to be confused with Kazaam, the Shaq-ical genie).

    • Vinton

Doesn’t Teth-Adam (aka Black Adam) also say the word SHAZAM to summon his powers? He just looks a lot more like Black Adam than Captain Marvel.

      • Nathaniel Haywood

        I agree!

  • GrimReaper07

I know absolutely nothing about the character. That said, it seems like a tough sell to get viewers to go see a superhero movie called Shazam.

  • Thomas K.

Rock would kill it as Shazam. Like legitimately could, should at least, steal the Show.

..And Yes, He’s still the Rock. (I grew up in the Attitude Era, Leave Me alone.)

  • RKO

Word on the streets is Martin Campbell is directing Shazam.

    • Thomas K.

Word on the Streets is Martin Campbell isn’t allowed on the set of anything that has more value than any YouTube Production.

      • YodaRocks

The word on the street should be that DC and Warner Bros are shutting shop.

  • jk

Would love to see a SHAZAM movie!

  • Guy Smiley

“Man of Steel didn’t do especially well,”

Over $291 million domestically, and the #5 film of 2013 in the U.S. The films that beat it were all established franchises with big followings (Hunger Games, Iron Man 3, Despicable Me) or an acclaimed Disney flick that appeals to the kids and adults alike (Frozen). The international take was even bigger, with another $377 million. So over $670 million overall. That’s “didn’t do especially well”??

Sure beat out the insipid Superman Returns (by rather a lot… MOS beat it by over $90 mil in the States, and nearly doubled SR’s international take), and it clearly did well enough that WB’s using it as the launching pad Justice League and the expanded DCMU. MoS was pretty well split in terms of the critics, and in fan circles too, but that can be said about a lot of franchises.

I get that all the destruction upset some people, others didn’t like Pa Kent’s death, and others still were upset about Supes killing Zod. I certainly didn’t think the movie was perfect by any stretch (though I still liked it a lot)… But the idea that it didn’t do well is ludicrous, especially when one considers how many problems WB’s had making DC movies that didn’t star Batman.

    • LEM

I just thought it was a bad movie and not worth building a DC universe of films on.

      • K-Money

It appears those with deep pockets disagree with you.

      • LEM

They just saw the money Marvel is raking in and decided to stop dragging their feet.

      • Damn

I felt IM2 was a terrible intro to the Avengers. Then i saw Avengers.

      • LEM

I didn’t see IM2 as the prologue to Avengers since they really started it at the end of the first film and used the other standalone films to build to it.

    • DJ2 Deuce

Just to add on it made 170 million in endorsements and commercial deals. That seems like it did pretty well.

    • YodaRocks

Did you imply that Superman isn’t an “established franchise with Big followings”?
Let me tell you son, that Superman is the great-grand-daddy of all those you have listed, when it comes to an “established franchise with big followings”.
Man of Steel was a horrible movie coming from horrible writers and director and deserved to fail. It didn’t fail as spectacularly as I would have liked after watching the movie but I sure wish this ‘Supes v Bats’ does so that all this childhood-destroying travesty ends.

    • Agent777

Everyone who bitches about MOS desrves to be pelted by all the copies of Superman Returns no one wants.

  • Guy Smiley

I must be the only person who doesn’t want to see this happen.

Don’t get me wrong… I’d like a SHAZAM! movie if it’s good. I think it needs to be separate from the rest of the DCMU though. Keep it in its own universe, and keep it exciting and fun, but also lighthearted enough since it’s really just a kid who becomes an adult superhero when he says the word.

But I really, really don’t like The Rock. I think he’s a terrible actor who makes terrible movies, and except for his size and build I don’t see him in the role. I think his delivery will be all wrong. I could see him playing Black Adam, I guess, but again I think the guy’s a shitty actor.

Oh well. It can’t be any worse than Batman v. Superman is shaping up to be, with all those heroes shoehorned into what’s supposed to be a Superman sequel, not to mention the horrible casting for Luthor.

    • altechi

It’s been clearly shown that it is not a superman sequel, and, if the leaked road map gives any indication, it’s going to be a while until the next superman film comes.

Only Batman, Superman and WW hase been confirmed, the rest are still rumours. And I still don’t get the hate of Jesse, I think he will do great, and hopefully a better luthor than in the past iterations (the campy, silly ones by hackman and spacey)

    • Human Mover

Watch Southland Tales (2006). The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) plays a gay character and shows he can be a decent actor. He doesn’t do his usual schtick – like raising an eyebrow – that he does in his action films.

    • Bob

I would also suggest if you have not seen them to watch Snitch and Pain & Gain. Pain & Gain is pretty bad overall but The Rock gives a pretty good performance honestly. And with Snitch, The Rock shows he actually clearly has acting chops.

Plus, The Rock playing a superhero that is truly a boy inside and says things like a little boy? Perfect honestly, his perfect humor type. And his hulking physic. He could really be perfect for the role.

  • Grayden

Wonder who they’ll get for Black Adam.

Also, wondering if they’re going to use Billy Batson throughout the film or not. Would be pretty interesting to have the film not feature Captain Marvel for the majority of it.

  • LEM

    I think he’d make a better Lobo.

    • Thomas K.

I’m not disagreeing…. But who in the Hell is actually going to see a Lobo film. Think of it from the studio’s perspective.

Lobo isn’t worth making unless it’s an R.
DC/WB isn’t going to make an R film any time soon.
Shazam is WAAYYY easier to market towards Kids and Families, which is where the money is at.

      • LEM

it doesn’t have to be a standalone Lobo movie but instead work him in as a villain against Justice League or something.

  • leejoe12

i always thought Dwayne Johnson would make a rather good Lobo.

  • Nathaniel Haywood

Call me crazy, but I think the oddest thing about this will be seeing the Rock with hair – unless they’re going to make Shazam bald. I do agree that he looks more like Black Adam than Shazam, and he’d be an even better John Stewart (who cares if he’s too big physically – Stewart is supposed to be a military soldier, so why not have him be fit?). I think comic book movies are perfect for the Rock, though, so I think signing him up is a good call.

  • Joey Robinson

I thought he was being considered as Black Adam but I guess I can see this working. He could play a lot of these guy. Lobo springs to mind, even though I always thought Jason Mamoa would be best for that one.

  • Cedhollywood

Whoever ends up playing Shazam is the easy part. Whoever is cast to play Billy is what’s really going to sell this movie if all of this is true.

  • Let The Wookie Win

So…are we going to see The Rock in a White Wall Street Guy wig? Because this is not Captain Marvel hair http://www.awesomelyluvvie.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/the-rock-fanny-pack.jpg

“has the power of Superman” Doomsday?

  • appolox

Eh Dwayne Johnson just isn’t heroic enough for Shazam. He’d be better suited for Black Adam.

  • Andrew Sanders

The ‘Rock’ as Shazam? Just NO!! Awful choice!
But Idris Elba as John Stewart in a GL movie def gets my vote,…though I still prefer Hal or Guy as my fave GL’s from the graph novels.
Apart from the visuals of Oa & the Corps,Mark Strong’s Sinestro was the best thing about the GL movie.

    • Agent777

You lost me on “The Rock no, Elba yes.” I dare say, though the Rock is rougher around the edges, he tries harder than Elba, who feels like he’s always hitting the snooze button.

Captain Marvel is the most retarded “heroes” in the DC universe. (Or any for that fact) NO ONE could make this character any good. He and Plastic Man should have died decades ago. Kiss your career goodbye if you do this Dwayne.
I would rather see a Wonder Twins movie.
