Though Robert Downey Jr. is currently busy shooting the third installment of his Marvel franchise Iron Man, he has another popular series that’s poised to get the threequel treatment at some point in the near future.  The success of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (it grossed over $540 million worldwide) spurred Warner Bros. to get working on another entry in the action sleuth series, as the studio hired Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce to handle the screenplay last October.

Word on the project since then has been quiet, but Steve recently sat down with Jude Law at the Toronto Film Festival to talk about his upcoming romantic drama Anna Karenina.  Towards the end of the conversation, Law provided a brief update on Sherlock Holmes 3, expressing his excitement at the prospect of reuniting with the Sherlock team for another go-around.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

“No I don’t yet.  I mean there’s certainly talk of it and I know there’s a script being played around with, but Downey’s a busy boy and I’m a busy boy so we’ll see.  But we want to [do another one].  We’re a very happy team and we have a lot of fun and we also think there’s still a lot of legs in the duo.”

It’s a minor update, but Law certainly seems game to return for more Sherlock Holmes adventures.  He and Downey Jr. are likely mulling over a number of projects in the near future, but Law recently committed to starring in Wes Anderson’s upcoming The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Watch the portion of Steve’s interview with Law pertaining to Sherlock Holmes 3 below, and look out for the full interview closer to Anna Karenina’s release.

  1. The ending of “Game of Shadows” left the series open for another sequel. I still call it one of the best endings to a movie I’ve ever seen.

  2. I’m OCD about watching a film from start to finish. No matter what kind of late night low budget crap it is. I fell asleep during GOS and never bothered to go back and watch it again. Thats how bad it was. First was good though. Go figure.

  3. I’ve never seen a franchise where the sequel was such a huge improvement over the first installment. Seriously. The first movie was painfully bad (the only good things were the production design, score, and chemistry between Downey and Law), but the second was exciting, well-paced, and incredibly fun to watch. Bought it the week it came out on Blu-ray. Looking forward to a third one, but even if it doesn’t get made, I won’t complain.

  4. First one was lame and second was bad, so no need to go on. Besides its beneath RDJs talent level. Hope there will be a Stark-Hulk movie!

  5. Stupid movies esp the 2nd, RDJ should do something more interesting. With Iron Man and Avengers he has critical acclaim and box-office success. That Sherlock stuff is so ordinary.

  6. Im a big sherlock holmes fan and while I think the BBC adaptation is the BEST EVER! I certainly enjoyed watching this big screen version. I thought 1 was far better than 2 though and that seems to be contrary to what everyone else here is saying, but there you have it. =)

I think there is enough room for several adaptations. Will buy ticket to see 3 when it comes out but PLEASE enough with the “slam bam OVer the top action crap” If I wanna see that I will buy tickets to whatever generic action film is out that week. I watch Sherlock Holmes for 2 reasons. The interaction between him and watson AND the interesting intellectual mysteries. NOT the blow them up shoot them down low brow crap. and also, no more Naomi Rapace…there was NO point to her character except to take away screen time from JL and RDJ.

  8. PLease, give us another Sherlock, and I agree with the comment that they need to go back to its roots, to the mistery and craizy situations between this two great actors. Sherlock Holmes 3, must be soon!!!

  9. I think that they method in which they revamped the orginal doyle series is exceptional. I look forward to a third installment of sherlock holmes even though the relationship depicted by the two actors resemble that of doc house and wilson is very humorous even down to the fact when house was attempting to sabotage the relationship between wilson and amber. Still find the acting very entertaining.

  10. I read on a scripting site that claims to have scripts of new and movies about to come out, that the next Sherlock is about the duo going up against Frankenstein that they take a trip to Germany so that Holmes can recover from some injuries sustained from his battle with Moriarty. And learns of bodies being stolen, and other odd goings on. Then the monster is brought to life and starts killing they have to track it, can it even be killed? Things along that line, I know I am keeping it short on details on purpose encase it does end up being made into a movie. I do not want to give it all away, and if your that interested then you can look for it like I did. It was written by one of the Iron Man writers and also was last I knew to be directed by the same. It was also to be a Halloween release or Fall release date. I thought that it sounded interesting when I read it, but it sounds like they are changing the idea now, The Hounds of The Baskervilles has been over done.

  11. eagerly waiting 4 sherlock holmes 3…..
