If you’re looking for good, lighthearted fun, you’re probably not going to get it from the fourth season of Sherlock. Judging by the first trailer as well as what we learned at Comic-Con, dark times are ahead for Sherlock Holmes. During our interview with co-creator Steven Moffat at Comic-Con, he told us, “It’s the same show. Hopefully, there are lots of laughs and lots of great personal stuff, but it is explicitly a darker season.”

But will that darkness make it a better show? We’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, PBS has released the first official promo image for Season 4, and it doesn’t look particularly cheerful. Sherlock is contemplating, and Watson is either distracted or won’t even look at his friend. Gleam what you can from this photo, because we’re likely not getting any more marketing for the show until later in the year since the show is likely to return around January 2017.

Plot details on the season are still scarce.  Moffat won't say which Arthur Conan Doyle stories they're drawing from, and our only clue is the resurgence of the deceased Moriarty.  We also know that Toby Jones is coming to torment Sherlock and Watson as one of Sherlock's greatest foes, Culverton Smith.  However, that's still not much to go on at this point, but I suppose it's better than nothing.

Check out the Sherlock season 4 image below. The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves, and Louise Brealey.
