Sin City 2, which has lived in development hell for the past six years, may finally be coming to life.  Director Robert Rodriguez says he now has financing for the flick and he would shoot the film before the year was out as long as he had a quality script.  However, he also hit upon a unique problem with the original Sin City in that the movie was not so much written as it simply used Frank Miller’s comics as a storyboard while bringing hardly anything new to the table.  It remains the strongest case for why a 100% faithful adaptation is pointless.

But I have some hope that Sin City 2 may be better because Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) is coming on board to work on the script.  Hit the jump for more.

Miller wrote the original draft of the script and THR reports that Monahan has been hired to work on and supplement the screenplay.  Rodriguez hinted at Comic-Con that all of the characters who survived the first film would return for the sequel.  Usually that’s a tough task to round up an ensemble cast to shoot their scenes together and finding time in all their schedules.  Sin City 2 will likely dodge that problem by shooting the entire movie on green screen and dividing the movie into multiple segments.  While Rodriguez can round up name actors, he’s really only hiring them for 40-minute movies (provided the sequel is structured like the original).

Monahan’s stayed in high demand ever since The Departed (writing a box office hit and winning an Oscar for it tends to have that effect).  He wrote the original draft of the screenplay for Joseph Kosinski’s Horizons starring Tom Cruise, and last week we reported that Monahan was re-teaming with Martin Scorsese to write a remake of The Gambler.  Monahan’s directorial debut, London Boulevard, is set to finally make its US debut on VOD on October 5th.
