Dimension Films has released the new full-length Sin City: A Dame to Kill For red-band trailer that premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend.  And it doesn’t seem like directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller (read our SDCC interview) have done anything new for the sequel.  The film stars Josh Brolin as the physically altered Dwight (played by Clive Owen in the first film), who is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord (Eva Green), and then watches his life go straight to hell.  Also going straight to hell is my interest in this movie.  I enjoyed the first film but felt that even this trailer was too much time spent back in the arbitrarily stylized world.  Nothing had any impact.  The only thing this film could do to surprise me is fashion a tight, engaging narrative.

Hit the jump to watch the full-length Sin City: A Dame to Kill For red-band trailer.  The film also stars Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Powers Booth, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Dennis HaysbertChristopher MeloniJeremy PivenRay LiottaJuno Temple, Stacy Keach, and Julia Garner.  Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens on August 22nd.

I just feel like I’ve seen this before.  I love so many of the people involved but just can’t muster any enthusiasm.  Trailer via Machinima:

Here’s the official synopsis for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For:

Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller’s visually stunning “Sin City” graphic novels back to the screen in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Weaving together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales, the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more notorious inhabitants. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is the follow up to Rodriguez and Miller’s 2005 groundbreaking film, FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY.

As somebody who very mildly enjoyed the original, this one loses me at ‘A Dame to Kill For’.

    • Underground Anthem TX

That’s a shame, because ADTKF is the best SIN CITY story by far.

      • mr_teaspoon

Well, if reviews are good I’ll check it out when it’s on Blu Ray. It’s just that ‘a dame to kill for’ sounds like something an 8th grader came up with.

  • cruzzercruz

Well, technically, Josh Brolin plays an UNaltered Dwight, as this story takes places prior to the events of the first film. Clive Owen had the new face.

Very excited about this film after all this time.

There should be two versions of Dwight within ADTKF- Brolin should be playing the bald version (guess he didn’t want to shave his head) whose rearranged face becomes Clive’s likeness. Technically, Owen should be in this particular story/prequel, but bowed out. It looks as if they’re dropping the new likeness.

What I’m hoping for is that Clive shows up in an unannounced cameo. Hey, a guy can dream.

If this movie takes place prior to the first one then why is Hartigan dead? I’ve never read the source material so I can’t comment on the timeline of the comics.

      • cruzzercruz

The whole thing doesn’t take place before. Dwight’s story does, which is why Marv is alive to help him. Nancy’s story is post “That Yellow Bastard” and she’s avenging Hartigan.

The comics were the same way. One would be released, and without indication, have characters return who died before. It was up to the reader to deduce the timeline. Both the “A Dame to Kill For” and “Just Another Saturday Night” segments take place pre or during the original Sin City film’s stories. Nancy’s new original story will be post. Not sure about the second new one with JGL.

      • pandapool

I see. So the movie will have a ‘pulp fiction’ type of nonlinear storyline then?

      • cruzzercruz

        Yeah, similar to that.

I really enjoyed the first one, but I know a lot of people who hate it. Not just dislike it, but really hate it, but they never give me a reason of why.
I’m excited for this one, but I don’t know why everyone at Collider is so down about it. It’s like as soon as it was announced, they weren’t even giving it a chance.

    • MCP

Yep, I’m def. game for this. Writer for these trailers/articles has been saying the same thing on every one of them, it does get old.

    • Georce Johnson

Yeah, I went to it with a friend and he was seething in disgust while I was eating it up. So weird how people react to it.

    A few things:

    1. Can we put Mickey Rourke and Nick Nolte in the same, dialogue-driven film, and see just how raspily incoherent it gets?
    2. Did they spend a whole $10 on Hartigan’s gravestone or what?
    3. This…really is pretty misogynistic.
    4. I don’t know what was up with that opening, but my big takeaway is “Frank Miller can’t act”.

  • Dipstick

With mad max and sin city releasing comic con trailers……..how about some Age of Ultron action for those people who couldn’t make it to the con because the were working they’re shit jobs in the Midwest.

  • GrimReaper07

Sin City is one of the best comic book films out there. Very excited about this one.

    • Stergios

I think I couldn’t possibly me more excited about this! I think it will follow the original’s tradition and be one of the greatest films of all time!

      • GrimReaper07

Wow, the original is one of the best comic book films ever, but one of the best films of all time is kind of ridiculous.

  • MJ

God this looks dumb. Still, Eva Green’s tatas are beckoning me to see it….

    • theseeker7

then I’ve got one word for you, friend: “Dreamers”

more Eva Green nudity than you could ever possibly want, while enduring zero (potential) Sin City torture.

edit: okay I forgot, technically there’s a “The” that goes before that one word above :p

    • Mr. Smith

Because no one answered my previous comment, and no one ever really goods a good reason of why they don’t like the first one, why does this look dumb to you?

      • MJ

Not sure if you will like my reason, but I have personally never liked noir types of crime dramas.

      • Michael C

Why do you always like your own posts?

      • MJ

        Simple, I like my posts.

      • Mr. Smith

No, that’s a good reason. I understand that that isn’t your type of movie. Most of the time, I just get answer like “it was shitty,” but not saying why they felt it was.

Has any actress ever spent so much screen time playing the character of a stripper but with never actually taking anything off as Jessica Alba?? lol

Geez, Evan, tell us how you really feel, won’t you?
Shouldn’t entertainment reporters really just give us the news without any bias (excluding legit reviews)? I mean look at the folks from Comingsoon.net or IGN. They really just report on things without giving us their strongly-worded two-cents all the time. I wish the Collider staff would follow suit.

    • Alex

IKR? Someone on another site said Collider is always troll-baiting, so I looked here and true enough, the article sounds like someone whining on a personal blog.

Oh yeah, Sin City ADTKF looks good.

    • Neven

I don’t know… the fact that the guys here always throw in some basic form of an opinion makes articles kind of “real” and flavorful for me, and not just bland “soulless reports” without any taste, if that makes any sense. And even though I don’t always necessarily agree with their opinion, I do respect it because it’s never offensive and intrusive.

IGN has some great reporters, but they are severely dragged down by their comments section oversaturated with horny and agressive 12-year olds who have much more to learn. Also, being primarily a video game-related site, you’ll hardly find any “less-than-summer blockbuster” movie news there.

      comingsoon is pretty cool.

  • Stergios

This post is ridiculous. Sorry Evan, but maybe you guys there in Collider don’t know much about the art of cinema. All I got to say about this trailer is this: Electric, hypnotizing, breathtaking! Now
that’s what I call a trailer!!! I’ve really watched it 10 times back to
back already. I mean, I’m speechless. I couldn’t possibly imagine that
there could ever be a sequel that would manage to surpass the first film
on a visual and aesthetic level. As for the screenplay, the
performances, the direction, I mean what can I say? This is cinema of
the highest order. And just give Eva Green her Oscar! I adore, ADORE the
whole “Sin City” mythology, but really after this trailer (and the
mesmerizing other two previously released) my expectations were over the
moon and they were not only met, they were exceeded!

    • Noomba

      I agree it looks amazing!

  • Daz

God, Jessica Alba struggles as a lead. Why did Rodriguez have to screw with ADTKF and write in more of his own schtick? At least the JGL addition looks promising.

  • Daniel O’Reilly

Not much of a red band trailer. There was hardly anything in it that would be inappropriate for a green band (particularly not if 50 Shades of Grey, with all its suggestions of BDSM, can get away with green band).

  • Stefan Bonomo

Considering the first Sin City is one of my favourite movies of all time, I’ve been excited for this movie ever since they announced it. Every new piece of footage just makes me smile and smile. And I really like the consistent look it has the first one. Considering that ADTKF’s stories take place before, during, and after the stories of the first Sin City, I’m just waiting for the inevitable Epic Chronological Order Edition, and I will watch the shit out of it.

    • Mr. Smith

No, I like the non-linear aspect, the chronological order would just seem off to me. It would be like if Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill were put in chronological order.

      • Stefan Bonomo

I think it works for Sin City as the stories are separate yarns told from the perspective of different characters. Also all the stories in the graphic novels were written and published separately. The extended edition of the first Sin City also put the stories in chronological order anyway so I’m used to that.

I would say it wouldn’t work for Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill as those were meant to be out of order and use a lot of parallels and foreshadowing with this. While Sin City is more so just 3 separate stories, with the second half of the first story being shown at the end, to make it more interesting.

    • lord jim

i read the graphic novels so i have kind of seen that movie like i had seen the first one (which was the closest comic adaption ever) and i´m still excited.mickey rourke and eva green, oh man!!!

That’s cheered me up again! I was always going to pay to see this though ; )
