SINISTER SIX Release Date Set for November 11, 2016; THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 Pushed to 2018

Two Sony superhero projects that seemed to be very much in doubt over the past few months (ever since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to match expectations at the box office) are now back on the map in a major way.  Sony has just announced firm release dates for both the villain spinoff The Sinister Six and The Amazing Spider-Man 3.  It’s not all confetti though, since this means The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will be pushed one year beyond the already rumored release date shift to 2017.

All of this means that The Sinister Six release date will be November 11th, 2016 while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has to wait all the way until May 4th, 2018.  That last date might not be such a bad thing, as it gives Sony and director Marc Webb (if he stays attached) more time to course correct a franchise that has been sinking at an alarming rate.  Hit the jump for more on The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Sinister Six release dates.

the-sinister-six-release-date-comicPer The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is very enthusiastic about writer/director Drew Goddard’s take on The Sinister Six (not a surprise, Goddard is a huge talent).  Also, it’s possible that the allure of Avengers style crossover cash is too difficult to pass up.  While unconfirmed, it stands to reason that the spin-off film will be very much in the same universe as Webb’s first two Amazing Spider-Man films.  Given the overall rejection of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this is something I would doubt if not for the fact that they’ve re-upped on The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to directly follow the film.

This means that Jamie Foxx’s Electro might appear in The Sinister Six. Anyone optimistic that Goddard can straighten that character out? If anyone can, it’s the guy who brought us The Cabin in the Woods. As for how to fix The Amazing Spider-Man 3, that’s anyone’s guess.

….and so the lame and ill-conceived ASM “franchise” started it’s inevitable implosion.

Fox is already doing that reboot….and it does not seem to be going anywhere near a direction any comic fan would wany

        That was the joke, yes.

    Uncharted June 2016.
    Sinister Six November 2016.

Can Sony turn it around after kicking out the Vice Chairman?

    This can’t be happening

Garfield will be 35 playing a 20 year old.

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Maguire was playing a 22-year-old at age 32. Not much different/better.

Except his films were a hell of lot better!

        Number 3.

      • Lovecraftlives

I liked number 3. It was better than Amazing Spiderman 2.

Well, two of them were at least.

So what the hell is the Sinister Six movie going to be about if Spider-Man isn’t in it? There is clearly no point to it other than to steal money, but I think everyone is seeing through Sony, and hopefully no one will go and see this movie, and Spider-Man will revert back to Marvel.

    • http://mattedscreen.blogspot.com/ TheMattedScreen

yeah that’s what I’m confused about too – no Spider-Man? So it’s going to be a bunch of bad guys sitting at a table scheming how to kill Spider-Man?

    • Mark

Sounds like a Studio conceived film to me. This is probably how it went down.
Columbia Exec: Hey, Avengers made alot of money by having a lot of characters in it. We should do that with our Spider-man characters!
Avi Arad: Good idea, but Spider-man is the only hero we own. How can we make this different from Amazing Spider-man 3?
Exec: We make it about the villains. Isn’t there a team of Spider-man villains like Sinister something?
Arad: I have no idea, never read the comics. Lets ask a Alex Kurtzman
Kurtzman: Oh yeah, the Sinister Six. Sure, I can make it into a movie.
Writer: Uhm, well what should I write
Kurtzman: I don’t care, but include alot of explosions, cheesy humor, a convoluted plot that sounds complicated and thought out, and a hot chick.
Arad: And then when you write it, Kurtzman and I will read it, cross out the intelligent parts, and ask for more explosions.

Writer: Well ok, I guess at least I’m going to have my name on a screen.
      Kurtzman: Yeah, sure…
Marc Webb: Uhm, I’m not sure if I comfortable with this.
Exec: Shut up! We own you.

spiderman will most definitely be in the sinister six,but only spiderman. not peter parker. he will probably be seen through the eyes of the villains throughout the movie and then they all have a big showdown finale.

      • Pernell Whitaker

I think you might be right, but sh*t that sounds so lame if true.

      • Jack Dennis

idk. if they can get the audience to truly root for the villains to kill spiderman only to fail obviously it could be great fun.i could be wong. he could have a bigger part .this could still be a spiderman movie but with with a big emphasis on the villains.either way I’m in! drew goaddard is extremely talented and I’m confident he’ll make something special.

    • Lovecraftlives

I am now call it, Sinister Shit! Or maybe Sinister of Shit. It is over for Spiderman at Sony. Wake the fuck up everybody!!!

  • Pk

Didn’t electro die in the end of asm2? I rather Goddard add venom and carnage to the group…

    • Kyle Chandler

Didn’t see it, but it would be pretty weird to introduce those two characters in a movie without spiderman.

  • Kyle Chandler

So even though ASM2 received a lukewarm reception, a spinoff movie featuring the mediocre villains from those two movies is the follow up?

Goddard is talented but this movie seems like a huge stretch for Sony and I don’t imagine a lot of people getting excited for it.

  • TigerFIST

    Go back to Marvel/Disney.

  • Louie Jonze

As long as that stupid Rhino ‘transformers’ suit isn’t any where near the Sinister Six, I’ll be a little more optimistic. Unfortunately Sony is still gonna screw this up.

    • Grendal Sven

I had no problem with the suit, it was Paul Giamatti’s shitty acting that did it for me.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

And together, they created a perfect storm of awful.

      • Louie Jonze

Giamatti was Nicolas Cage-silly as the Rhino but that suit was the final nail in the coffin. If Rhino isn’t in TASM2, then it would have been a bit better. Not much better but still better.

  • appolox

Anybody else think it would have been a better idea to end the 2nd one with Peter morning Gwen and then have Harry recruit his team in the Sinister Six movie, and have Spider-Man make his triumphant return at the end and start off 3 where Sinister Six left off?

  • Alboone

It’s a new angle in spotlighting the villains so at least they’re differentiating themselves from bats v Supes and Cap 3, but at this point for me and Spidey I am done. ASM2 left a really bad taste.

I’m all for comic book films continuing to evolve and show new things, but this whole plan from sony feels like a cynical attempt to avengers-ify their considerably smaller universe.

    • Musikonica

It should feel like that, that’s precisely what they’re doing. All they have is Spider-man and his villains, so they can’t even do what FOX attempted with X-Men Origins.
I wish I could say I’m excited to see this new take on the Spider-man universe, but Sony’s own lack of confidence resonates…

      • Kyle Chandler

At this point I feel like they’re panicking because they no longer have any idea what is working and what isn’t.

I think Drew Goddard is talented, and I have a feeling he wouldn’t have come on board (or left daredevil) if this wasn’t interesting. The movie might turn out to be pretty great, but that would be a pretty big surprise, and clearly would be in spite of the suits at sony.

      • Musikonica

I agree. Hopefully Sony relaxes and the team can put together an awesome story.

Fuck the haters I loved ASM2.

I don’t think Sinister Six should be a separate film but who knows, could be cool.

    • eternalozzie

It was good … the old people here just liked the bland Power Ranger Movies Raimi did so much … and there was some terrible dialog here and there in ASM2 …. I really liked Dane Dehaan in ASM2 … I assume he will be headlining Sin 6

    • Canon

ASM2 had no soul, no excitement, no sense of danger for Spidey, and worst of all, no characters worth caring about. Not defending Raimi’s movies (3 was really bad), but at least his parts 1 & 2 looked like the people involved in making the movies actually gave a shit.

      • eternalozzie

The chemistry between Garfield, Stone, and DeHaan was great because they are very talented … the storyline was the weak point.
Electro was a character I couldn’t into to.

ASM2 was as fine a film as any of them. Until Webb manages to make a film like Spider-Man 3, they will always be better than what we have seen.

Batman vs Superman going against Captain America 3? Could go either way at the box office.

Spiderman going against Avengers 3? Get ready for another reboot…

      • dolphin558

BvS vs CA3 won’t happen. One will move. CA3 has demonstrated early April releases can be lucrative but Iger’s pride may play a factor. Bottom-line: that head to head won’t occur.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Marvel reiterated on Monday though that they’re not moving CA3 and are willing to let them go head to head at the theater. As much of a bluff as it might be, I wouldn’t put it past Disney to stick to that. By contrast, WB/DC doesn’t seem to have a sense of organization, so I can see them shifting to early April. It’s probably to BvS’s advantage anyways, because the last thing DC is going to want is having to measure up to a franchise that (as of CA2) is firing on all cylinders during its press cycle. Going first let’s it stand in comparison to MoS instead, which is the comparison it really wants anyways, and then when CA3 comes out a few weeks later, it’ll have to live up to the mark set weeks before.

      • Guest

What I would do if I were WB is move BvS back a week, that way you are pretty much guaranteed that you will take the no.1 spot from CA3 which by then will only have had 1 week at the top of the box office.

Then again if I were WB, that would be only one of very many things I would do differently.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

That would definitely knock Cap off the #1 spot, but it would also drastically cut into BvS’s profits, which WB/DC doesn’t want either. As a spite move it’d be fine, but I’m guessing business trumps spite.

      • Kyle Chandler

It’s possible. A lot can happen between now and the release of those films. My point was more that both films would take a hit, but probably both will be considered successful.

I love both marvel and DC, but I admit that I want to see this showdown. If you don’t take it too seriously, a little rivalry can be fun.

I thought Marvel had nothing planned for May 2018, only July.

      • Musikonica

It was just confirmed today. HOWEVER, they have not yet confirmed it was Avengers 3. Until Dolphin shows otherwise, I think that’s wishful thinking.

    • Musikonica

Where has Marvel confirmed Avengers 3 is the newly-announced May 4th, 2018 movie date? Avengers movies end each Phase and they’ve set dates into 2019 before announcing this new 2018 one. I think we’re getting Avengers 3 in 2019.

      • dolphin558

Since the first two were 3 years apart, it is safe to assume the mystery May 2018 film will be Avengers 3. No reason to believe they would veer away from that template. 2019 is totally arbitrary whereas May 2018 has precedent. Phase 3 begins with the first film after Avengers 2 which will build up to the next Avengers 3 years later, like before. It is known.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Also, at this point, is it really so hard to believe that Marvel has begun planning Phase 4?

      • Musikonica

A safe assumption. Not a guarantee.
Considering only one movie is set for 2019, I think there is a little reason to believe they could push Avengers 3 a bit. And they could push it a year in order to make way for extra movies before making Avengers 3.
Also, RDJ just announced the other day he’s open to Iron Man 4 and GOTG just had its red carpet release that may have looked promising to Marvel enough to go ahead and set a date for a sequel.
So instead, they’re going to have Phase 4 start only 2 months after Phase 3 ends and already have three release dates for it? I’m skeptical. Won’t totally brush off your assumption, but I’m not holding my breath for Avengers 3 on that date.

      • dolphin558

For those of us wishing for the death of this franchise, I think this is quite good news for now. Sinister Six will tank in 2016. No one will care. The hardcore comic base who should care, won’t because it’s part of the reboot franchise bs. The gen pop will have no interest either, especially without evangelizing nerds. This means TASM3 is even more doomed. Then Sony might just be able to throw in that towel for Marvel to pick up.

    • Kyle Chandler

I almost wish I cared enough about this franchise to wish death upon it. It just seems so bland and boring to me.

      • Gary

No you’re bland and boring to you!

    • dolphin558

Garfield will be 34/35. Tobey closed out his series at 31/32. Garfield looks young for his age so he has that going for him. Also, hopefully with age he will bulk up. Dude is painfully skinny.

    • Agent777

This franchise decent into mediocrity was a forgone conclusion for me the moment Andrew Garfield was cast.

  • Chris

If they’re smart, they’ll use Sinister Six to build towards a more coherent story/script for ASM 3. ASM 2′s script was a mess.

    • Kyle Chandler

I’m pretty sure that part of the reason ASM 2 was a mess is because they were planning the Sinister Six movie.

    • Travis Gowen

If they are smart they would quit trying to sell Spiderman movies based on their one liners with a guy who is supposed to be a nerd, but looks like the guy who will always be a ladies man and has the charisma to go with it.

Actually I’d been wondering with the lingering sour taste that was left in many mouths from TASM 2, if Goddard hadn’t been starting to regret forsaking being the main showrunner on the Daredevil series just so he could direct SS.

  • Grendal Sven

If they want to make “Avengers style crossover cash” then they should make a movie as good as Avengers. I was hoping they would just sell the friggan rights to Marvel, but I guess that was to much to hope for.

Forget the Sinister Six! Instead of all this world building, why not focus on telling a good, stand alone story? Maybe like the Kraven/fearful symmetry line? Another great one could something with Mysterio…great rogue that could clean our palates much like the Scarecrow did in Batman Begins. Sony is gilding a turd with this franchise. Reboot!

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

Yeah, a trilogy devoted to one big but contained arc would be great and different from anything we’ve gotten in any superhero universe where each time it’s a different villain. A long-form Kraven or Venom/Carnage story spanning three movies would be fantastic.

      • Agent777

Superhero trilogies are a stupid idea. It’s trying to cram a expansive comic story into coherent series of three films.

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

How is it cramming if it’s one story over three movies? If anything you run the risk of Hobbiting it up due to not having enough material.

      • Kyle Chandler

I’m pretty sure 3 films would be sufficient for an overwhelming majority of story lines.

there wont be a Guardians sequel ,,, it’s going to tank … unless there is an Avitar-like nerd uprising buying tickets …

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I don’t know, I’ve been seeing a lot of TV spots for it since Saturday, and I don’t even watch TV. I’m seeing them in passing, so I think people know it’s coming, and I think they know it’s Marvel. The latter alone will probably seal the deal. If it gets 150-175 million here, it’s golden. Cap1 made $370 million on $140 million and got a sequel, and Cap1 was pretty so-so (the digital backdrops still bug the hell out of me) and I’m pretty sure GotG will meet that margin at the very least.

      • Gary

I’d bet money that Guardians is going to triple its budget just like all the rest. Other than attempting to be too cool for hype, what do you base your prediction on?

      • eternalozzie

based on the characters being too weird for mainstream moviegoers … but I 100% hope I am wrong

      • Gary

Oh no…..The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel announce for 2017. Current movie before release standing at 97%. Kinda don’t know what you are talking about.

      • milo

…and now the Guardians sequel has already been announced and has a date set.

Also currently 96% rating on RT ain’t too bad. It may not be a monster hit but at this point it would be very surprising if it didn’t break even much less “tank”.

    • Musikonica

      And Marvel’s May 4th 2018 movie?

  • eternalozzie

so …. $706 million dollars is a “overall rejection” … I’ll take 1% of that rejection please

    • Kyle Chandler

I’m not sure about rejection, but the overwhelming sentiment I saw from it was “meh”. I’m glad you enjoyed it, and overall people didn’t HATE it like they hated Spiderman 3. They just didn’t really feel much of anything at all.

I think the ASM films are competently made, moreso than the raimi ones in some places, but it lacks the sense of fun or the magic that the first two spiderman films had.

    • milo

Not a bad number in itself but it was the lowest grossing in the USA and the lowest worldwide. They need to convince audiences that the next is better or risk that downward trend continuing.

  • Agent777

Raimi would of already covered the Sinister Six in a way that actually makes sense to boot.

    • Gary

Like the way three villains were covered in the sensical Spider-Man 3? Raimi had his time in the sun and burnt completely out.

  • Colin Christian

Spider-Man always had the best villains.Having said that,Sony love to screw things up,perhaps Goddard can pull it from the brink, not sure about it though.

  • Musikonica

Marvel Studios just released news of setting a movie date for May 4th, 2018. Sorry, Sony and Spidey. Marvel just might make you beg for them to take Spider-man back.

  • Math

I liked that Batman TAS episode where the various villains where playing poker and telling stories of how they almost killed Batman… but even though it was all in the perspective of the villains, we got plenty of Batman moments. If they do a similar concept with Sinister Six, then I’m all for it… but if they plan to leave Spider-man completely out of it and make a movie about guys coming together for the sole purpose of killing a guy we will never even see… well that’s just ridiculously stupid and completely useless. How can they not see that? I respect Goddard a whole lot but I don’t see how that could ever work. Even though beside my better judgement, I would probably still pay money to see another crappy version of Spider-man, I will not give one cent to see a Spider-man less movie set in his world. This is beyond retarded, completely disrespectful to the fans and probably the best way to kill off a franchise that’s already hanging by a very thin thread.

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

That’s a great Batman TAS episode. Croc’s plan to “hit him with a rock” and then nothing else always makes me laugh.

    • Kyle Chandler

Whoa. Thanks for bringing that episode back into my memory. I loved that Batman TAS (and Justice League and Superman, etc.) were willing to do episodes like that. So great.

  • Tangled web (get it?)

Maybe somebody can answer this question for me because I still haven’t figured it out:
The entire movie, Peter was battling with his conscience over breaking his promise to Captain Stacey to stay away from Gwen….so much so he ended their relationship (but still managed to do some impressive stalking this side of Superman Returns). They eventually reconcile just in time for the climatic battle (because the only thing more amazing than Spider-Man himself was the script’s reliance on coincidence), and Gwen uses “my body, my choice” as an excuse to help save the day. She volunteers to help save the day. SHE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP SAVE THE DAY DESPITE KNOWING THE EMOTIONAL TURMOIL PETER’S BROKEN VOW TO HER FATHER HAS CAUSED. She dies. Then Peter mourns for a few months. Then he’s back in the fight.

Condensed version of their arc aside, can somebody please tell me what the theme of the movie was…..cause all I’m getting out of it is “don’t break promises”.

    • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

I thought it was pretty obvious the theme was “Whatevs”

    • Gary

      1. Uncle Ben died because of Parker’s dismissive attention as Spider-Man.
      Silly Boy.

      2. Gwen Died because Spider-Man has enemies and she couldn’t stay out of it.
      Silly Girl.

      3. Crime goes back up without a Spider-Man.
      Silly Crime.

Perhaps the overall theme in both movies is that Spider-Man must be forever separated from Peter Parker in order to protect people close to him, but Spider-Man must exist for the city. It’s the lesson that Captain Stacy tried to instill, but only the later death of his daughter made it realized for Parker.

Perhaps the theme, since he ignored Uncle Ben’s guidance and Captain Stacy’s guidance, is to listen to your elders. If you don’t, your main squeeze get’s her back broke.

“Whatevs” works too though. They are superhero movies, not life lessons for the rest of us.
