Though most can agree that this summer’s crop of movies has been surprisingly high in quality, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a rather noticeable blemish.  The film isn’t a total disappointment, as once again Marc Webb excels at the intimate character-centric moments and the performances by Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are spot-on, but the rest of the movie is a hodge-podge of messy set pieces and incongruous, over-the-top villain portrayals.  The film is coming to home video soon, and Sony is doing everything it can to ensure that the Blu-ray is a lucrative endeavor.  Amazing Spider-Man 2’s relatively disappointing box office led to a rethinking of Sony’s master plan when it came to the film franchise, and instead of moving straight into a sequel, the studio is putting The Sinister Six in first position.

As part of the exclusive bonus content on the Spidey Blu-ray at Target, fans will get a look into the plans behind setting up the Sinister Six film in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and a short teaser of footage from the featurette has landed online.  Hit the jump to take a look.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be available in stores on Blu-ray and DVD starting August 19th.  Click here to pre-order on Amazon.

In this short video teaser of the Target exclusive featurette, we see mostly plans that were excised from the finished film, such as the disembodied head of Norman Osborn.  It’s unclear how heavily this featurette will go into what was supposed to show up in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but for curiosity’s sake I hope we get to see those deleted scenes and/or the designs for some of the Sinister Six characters.  If you want to see this featurette, however, it looks like you’ll have to pick up the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Blu-ray at Target, as the Sinister Six tease only appears on a bonus disc that’s exclusive to that retailer.

The disembodied head of Norman Osborn? What? He is Mr. Freeze? It would explain alot if Webb though he’d been making a Joel Schumacher Batman film the whole time.

i thought that might be mysterio

Why are they showing footage from Raimi’s movies? That makes no sense. You have your new, suckier franchise, don’t confuse things.

    • Melwing

I found that extremely odd, too. There’s more footage in this from Raimi’s films than ‘Amazing’.

    • Dark Knight of Steel

Because the villains of the Raimi series were also members of the sinister six and this focuses on the villains, all the villains, not specifically the new series.

Except if the featurette is called “Setting Up the Sinister Six” (which it may not be, but that’s what Sony has called that video), that implies the featurette is about the current franchise’s setup of the Sinister Six and not just the group in general. Really misleading.

      • Jack Dennis

I think its just to get a visual of what villains are in the sinister six, but yes very cheap and misleading.

    • Sony has no idea wat they doin

Why don’t they just make this movie The Amazing Spider-man 3? I mean, who are they gonna fight against, Venom? That’d be boring and unnecessary. They finally have a talented director and writer in Drew Goddard behind this movie, so might as well utilize this opportunity to right TASM franchise’s ship.

Were you posting yesterday under the name “Marvel should buy X-Men and Spiderman”? If so, you really like the phrase “righting the ship” don’t you.

lol Didn’t realize I used that so much. Thanks for the pointer mate

Haha, it is you. I just thought it was funny and thought – either that phrase is more common than I think or it’s the same guy.

Good job righting the ‘righting the ship’ ship, Lex

They will undoubtedly be fighting against spider-man.

Or the most powerful foe of all: Gingivitis!

Brush your teeth, round and round, circles small, gums and all

      • http://www.JustPressPlay.net Lex Walker

And so the Sinister Six formed a rockin’ Ska band and by playing their hit song “Brush Your Teeth” on every radio in New York City, they were able to defeat Gingivitis and come together as a team – thus preparing them for their true test: a battle to the death with Spider-man in Spider-man 3.

What is that Transformer doing on the Amazing Spider-Man 2 cover??

  • Harry

Most people I know agree the summer has been incredibly weak. Amazing Spider-Man 2 started it off, then Neighbors, good but not as good as 2013′s This Is the End. Godzilla came next and had poor word of mouth like 2003′s Hulk. X-Men was the rare bright spot of May. Seth’s A Million Ways, despite me liking it, bombed and most liked Ted better. Edge of Tomorrow, a quality film, bombs. 22 Jump Street not as good as 21. Most were hoping Dawn of the Apes would be The Dark Knight for the series. It was still a great film, but more on par with Rise than better.

I’m normally not one to do the box-office equals qualilty routine, but it’s a little odd this is the first summer since 2001 we did not have one movie make more than 300 million domestically. This is pathetic. We need better movies. At least 2015 looks more promising, and of course the Oscar season of 2014.

Box office and movie quality are two different things. BO has been lower and nobody should be surprised considering what was released. Sequels to movies that made less are going to make less, same goes for franchises that are on a downward trend like Spidey and transformers (yeah I know both made plenty overseas). Before the summer started I probably wouldn’t have predicted anything to make $300M, and now it looks like Guardians may do just that. Movies making $300M and “better movies” are two separate things.

In terms of quality I’d say it has been a surprisingly good summer with Xmen, Apes, Edge of Tomorrow, Dragon 2, and now Guardians. Even Godzilla got better reviews (and made way more money) than the last Hulk.

And 2013 only had two summer movies that made more than $300M, Iron Man 3 and Despicable Me 2, both sequels to movies that made a ton of money and/or were well received by audiences (let’s not forget that after Iron Man 2 came Avengers).

      • Harry

Hulk sold more tickets and wasn’t too far off review wise of Godzilla. They are very comparable films with how poor word of mouth affected them.

We’ve gotten many good films but we haven’t had too many outstanding films.

  • Guy

The villains of the Amazing Spiderman are part of the reason why these movies stink. The Lizard looked terrible and was a bit of retread of Norman Osborn from Raimi’s film. Rhino and Electro were over the top ridiculous. They could’ve been pulled directly from Batman & Robin. Harry became the Green Goblin with little to no build up or motivation. Hope the villains of the Sinister 6 are portrayed better but I doubt that will happen.

    • Mysterio

Couldn’t agree more. The villains have been horrible for both movies. It’s like they learned nothing from Spider-man 3

Yea. Jaime Foxx’s pre transformation performance seemed like he pulled inspiration straight from Jim Carrey’s Edward Nigma.

    • Human … Work

Harry was built up with the illness and desperation. Him going after Spider-Man was a symptom of his ensuing madness from the formula

      • Guy

That was rushed with barely any build up. The friendship between Harry and Peter felt very forced. Can you imagine if there actually was a developed relationship between the two how The Gwen scene at the end would have had more of an impact. The movie should have dropped the spy parents angle and focused a little more on developing Norman and Harry. Everything in the movie aside from Peter and Gwen’s relationship was very shallowly developed. Rhino, Electro, and Harry. Madness doesn’t excuse a poorly plotted film.

What upset me mostly about TASM2 was the trailer. I mean I know it’s nothing new for a trailer to feature moments that don’t make it to the theatrical cut, but from multiple lines given in their preview, it’s like there was virtually a whole other plot thread that was going to be happening in this story that we didn’t see AT ALL. That’s just flat out wrong on Sony’s part.

Mainly from the Harry/Norman bedroom scene, and the Harry/Peter scene in that one office of Harry’s, I’m sure everyone knows which ones I’m talking about.

    • MIXTER

I agree! And same goes for Godzilla. trailers made that film look like Godzilla was gonna be the villain, stomping through cities and Cranston being the man who knows how to stop it, and the Halo jump being a mission to do something to bring it down. While i liked Godzilla, it was a completely different film that was advertised.

Spidey 2, same, but with that i actually was surprised, i liked that film more than what the trailer showed us. Surprised it had good acting, and i liked the peter/gwen stuff. more talky than the cartoonish trailers made it look.

Doc Ock, Vulture, Electro, Kraven, Mysterio and Sandman were the original Sinister Six so I guess they’re not using that and are going to force in Rhino (fine),Venom(which is a huge mistake) and whoever else.

I loved so many things about this movie. Unfortunately all those things didn’t mix together very well.

I’m only writing this here because there’s no where else to write it, but Extant needs its own Wednesday Talkback. Great show (even if the general audience is refusing to give it a shot).

The only thing ‘sinister’ about this whole franchise is that it’s still in the hands of Sony.

  • Human … Work

I enjoyed the movie. Was it the best? No, was it terrible? No. It was simply okay. Hardly the disaster people like to claim

    • Brandon

I completely agree. I don’t understand how this sequel received less critical praise than the first movie, but TAS2 was leaps and bounds better than the first one, at least in my opinion.

I agree. I dug the second one – warts and all.
