If you watched the damn impressive (and long) opening ceremonies for the Olympics last night, you caught director Danny Boyle’s amusing James Bond short film featuring Daniel Craig and the Queen herself.  In addition to the royally-enhanced bit, a brand new TV spot for the new James Bond film, Skyfall, aired during commercial breaks, and that spot is now online for your viewing pleasure.  Instead of jamming as many explosions into 30 seconds as possible, this spot plays like a great mood piece, giving audiences a tiny taste of what director Sam Mendes has cooked up for his entry in the long-running franchise.  We also get an incredibly brief first look at Javier Bardem as the villain and a really great tag that showcases a humorous Bond stunt.

I continue to be impressed by what we’ve seen from Skyfall thus far, and I’m incredibly excited to see how it all comes together.  Hit the jump to take a look at the TV spot.  The film also stars Ralph Fiennes, Bérénice Marlohe, Judi Dench, and Naomie HarrisSkyfall opens on November 9th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Skyfall:

Daniel Craig is back as James Bond 007 in Skyfall, the 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time.  In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her.  As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Do I need to even to state the awesomeness of the last few seconds…

Testing the loyalty of Bond to M again… Um, that’s what Quantum of Solace was. I like this reboot though so whatever. Nice to see Naomie Harris is in it.

QoS was moreso testing the loyalty of M to Bond. And I don’t necessarily believe that plot is all there is. Ever really. I mean look at the last Batman movie. All it really said was “Bane is bad. Catwoman appears. Aaaaaaand GO.”

Reminds me of a discussion I once had about the relative importance of plot. I asked my friend, “So what is the plot of Jaws?”

To be contentious, however, many plots are often reduced in criticism to a slim structure that betrays their nuances. TDKR, for example, is more complex than the simple plot of Bane bad, Catwoman appear, go… It involves, for example, the relation of a (spoiler) certain antagonist to the primary antagonist of Batman Begins (revenge, clean energy initiatives, the access and resources to pull off the assault on Gotham City) and the effects of the end of TDK (especially the noble lie, Dent Act, and the facade of cleanliness), etc.

An important illustration of the initial point, however. In terms of plot, John Blake’s character is relatively superfluous. He does save Gordon, but this represents the only purely functional role he plays in the plot. Everything he does has a slight superfluousness to it if we think only in terms of plot. Why try to save people before a nuclear blast? What is the importance of finding out about the explosives in the underground if the plot succeeds anyway? Gordon saved himself in the hospital. He captures Catwoman to find out what, Bane is bad? Catwoman is broken out of prison as quickly as she is put in it.

What Blake does is represent some of the most important themes of the film: hope and the responsibility of the rich to those less fortunate (it is a very Dickensian film underneath). He is the most idealistic character, a young embodiment of the early motivations of Bruce Wayne and Gordon, both of whom are stained by their handling of the Joker’s rampage. So my argument here is, theme can be as important as plot, and perhaps you would agree.

The problem with that Queen meets Bond scene was that a stupid UK newspaper, spilt the beans Her Madge was going to Knight Bond and ask him to open the games. Makes me wonder if Boyle and Co changed their minds.

On a side note, did we have to have crappy rap music during the Olympics ceremony?? It’s essentially a Jamaican style (MC or toasting) which the Yanks took and pretty much douched-up afterwards.

Am I the only one who thought the opening ceremony was pretty awful? The whole thing where the people were “texting” each other about the girl who lost her phone was painful to watch.

Probably not, but I thought it was great! :) (I’m not from Britain.) I was watching it with some friends and we commented that usually the opening ceremony of the Olympic games will have some big dance sequence and the commentators will have to explain that “this dance is to represent fire” or something. This opening ceremony I understood (sure, I am European, so maybe Asians or Africans thought this was just bizarre). And it was funny! Especially using Rowan Atkinson I thought was a stroke of genious! I don’t know if Brits know this, but he is internationally really well-known, probably more so than the Queen herself.

        oups… *genius

The special IMAX trailer before The Dark Knight Rises was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I went from complete apathy (thank Quantum of Solace!) to being completely excited for Skyfall.

Special IMAX trailer? I was at the midnight premier of TDKR in a real IMAX theater and received no such treat.

    Sick sick sick!
This one weekend then LINCOLN the next?!
    Egads! Yummy pre-Thaksgiving visual feasts!

I saw a bootleg trailer posted elsewhere, which while half unfocused, was better than this TV one.

Damn impressive? They were damn awful. Beijing set the bar far too high.

  • terry

Wow! I bet Skyfall will be better than that train wreck TDKR.
    He he!
