A red band trailer for writer/director Leslye Headland’s (Bachelorette) raunchy comedy Sleeping with Other People has been released online. The story revolves around two people who, after losing their virginity to each other in college, cross paths years later during a sex addicts meeting in New York City. They subsequently rekindle their friendship on the condition that they won’t sleep with each other, but as they find themselves growing closer as friends, their feelings for one another become more complicated.

I caught the film at Sundance (read my review here), and Headland’s succinct description of the pic as “When Harry Met Sally with assholes” is apt. This is very much your “best friends maybe possibly have romantic feelings for each other” story, but there’s a reason those kinds of stories exist: they’re relatable. Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis are really funny but also nail the sweetness and subtle emotionality of the film’s tone, so their “asshole-ness” doesn’t become a complete turn off. Moreover, the movie’s just plain funny.

Check out the new red band trailer below via Yahoo!, which gives a good sense of the film’s balance between raunch and heart, and click here for Steve’s video interview with Sudeikis and Headland. Sleeping with Other People opens in theaters on September 11th and also stars Adam Scott, Jason Mantzoukas, Andrea Savage, Amanda Peet, Natasha Lyonne, and Adam Brody.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Years after impulsively losing their virginity to each other in college, Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) meet at a support group in New York (“What’s a nice girl like you doing at a sex addicts meeting?”). A spark resurfaces, but they’ve walked this road before. Abject failures in romance who lead lives of serial infidelity and self-sabotage, they agree to a platonic friendship to mutually support their recovery—and what’s more supportive than teaching your friend proper self-stimulation? Can love bloom while you’re sleeping with other people?
